Ok so now fitted my new vr6 sebring cat back exhaust. All on great and looks the nutts.
Only problem is I keep smelling a burning rubber smell now. And now I have just noticed the floor inside car is hot and if you touch the metal rail that ataches the front seat to the floor you can't keep your finger on it as its that hot.
I still have the heat sheilds all fitted.
But the one thing about this exhaust is the strait pipe from cat to suitcase on this is and actual long thin box now not just a pipe so its closer to heat sheild.
Do vr6,s have thicker heat sheilds or something?
Is that to hot to be safe?
-
anybody?
-
Maybe get some exhaust heat wrap to be safe :undecided:
-
yeah could do.
does anybody mk3 get hot in the middle under handbrake area?
if you put your fingers on the metal inside seat runner but thats where its realy hot.
anybody els get this and if so is it ok?
-
must be a leak from somewhere.
-
Nope no leaks. Checked it all and there is no blowing anywhere.
-
Well the handbrake is roughly above where the cat meets the centre pipe, i presume it drives ok and revs cleanly it is a hot day though, could be you just never noticed it before.
-
Its behind the hand break right where the centre strait pipe is only mine is now a much larger box now. Car drives fine. Not the weather. Burns your fingers to touch bare metal where seat is bolted to floor there. May loose the box and put strait pipe from vr6 on instead.

Stainless exhausts run hotter, try an extra heatshield if you can
-
I had the same problem after fitting my stainless exhaust, the area under the handbrake would get really hot (and still does), but it's been 3 years and it's fine, no melting carpets, or rubber, all fine.
-
I run a stainless number with the middle box removed. yes, it runs a tad hotter than before but nowhere near as hot as you describe. Is the exhaust touching the floor/bodywork/beam etc?
-
Its not stainless and now has 3 boxes instead of 2. The pipe that goes from cat to suitcase is now a long round muffler instead of a bit of pipr so its diameter is about 115mm so its much closer to heat sheild.
Think I'm going to replace this with the standered vr6 pipe as I want abit more noise to.
-
Don't think its stainless anyway. If it is sebring have painted it black and stamped there logo all over it.
-
How about wrapping the offending part in heat repelling bandage?
-
I could do I spose but as the exhaust is very quiet I'd rather replace it with normal pipe.
Not sure if its a sound muffler or ment to make a certain exhaust sound. When you look throught the pipe you can see strait through it but it has that honeycomb metal on inner pipe walls like what you get in cherry bomb exhausts middle pipes. Don't make any sound though.
For a huge exhaust very disapointed with lack or sound.
Plus I wouldn't want to make it any thicker as it is tight as it is.
Just suprised the exhaust has been designed like this tbh.
-
Stick a magnet on the exhaust to see if it is stainless or not
-
Need heat wrap.
Car will explode!
-
I would carry a big fire extinguisher if I were you!
-
MK3 so will melt through the steel before it hits your carpet!
Is the system to close to the body... does it need bringing down a notch, lined up properly?
