 Anybody got any ideas on what to use for that new look on all the plastic on my 2 motors?? Have used Autoglym bumpercare for ages but am getting miffed that it don't last very long or restore the more faded plastic like it used to (i'm sure it ain't as good as it used to be!!)...................any ides'a appreciated. Thanks gang
-
this will sound very dodgy but works. you know how bad vauxhalls plastic goes? well i used this on my dads old vectra and it lasted for months.
next time you change your oil, keep the old black stuff in a bottle somewhere. then get and on rag and wipe it evenly over your black plastic, leave it for a while and wipe of any excess, don't worry you wont get oily marks everywhere!!! and there you go dark shiny plastic for ages. best of all its free!!!
-
I've heard mk2 owners on here recommend black shoe polish, the scuff guard one where you have to squeeze it down to get the polish out. Can't remember if they used a particular make or not though.
-
when i used black shoe polish it washed off after a while and left black streaks on my bodywork. looked sh!tter than it did in the first place
use turtlewax tyre gel
-
 must admit that the turtlewax tyre gel sounds the best so far,but all idea's appreciated......... cheers
-
Whatever you use mate, make sure it's silicone free, that way, if you have to have any paintwork done, the painter won't have any problems with the paint siliconing up.
I get mine from a local bodyshop supplier, can't remember what it's called, but it's blindin, and lasts for ages!
-
Use "scuff kote" or "scuff guard" shoe polish type stuff in an aplicator bottle (those with little sponges). Must be the Scuff stuff not just shoe polish (not all places have it, I got mine from sainsburys, asda didn't have any) and get a reasonable brand, only about £2
Trust me, 2 coats of this stuff lasts for months and months! Easy to apply and no mess!
-
For some reason, mine always looks a little better when I shammy it after rinsing. Someone once posted that they recommend the black liquids shoe polish from Lidl ( K5 or something like that - it's only about 2 or 3 quid). Are those Germans crafty or what?
-
 couldn't find the turtlwax tyre gel,but bought Williams F1 stuff like the Autoglym bumpercare and it really comes up great but am going to try the shoes polish as the front bumper on my gti is well faded....will let you know but recommend the Williams stuff and it's only £5:99.
-
I have heard of quite a few people using vegtable oil have never fancies tring it myself!!
I use the Autogym vinal one, you can leave it on for a shinny effect or rub it off for a mate, but I find it doens't last long.
The stuff that works and lasts is some green thick gunk stuff that I got from a valleters years ago
-
i tried turtle wax "black trim wax" in the past... utter sh!te!!
then the other week i was round a mates and he showed me this other stuff
from turtle wax called "black in a flash".. he put a bit on me rear spoler (very grey!)
and it was pretty good.
course he was a bit stingy with it
i bought a can of it soon after and finally got around to applying it last night..
it works on the door handles, all the exterior trim, even the rubbers!
and its supposed to be good on tyres and the interior too but not tried them yet
car looks proper good now! amazing how much difference it's made! well happy!
only test is to see how it lasts!
i've heard asda do a 2 for 1 on turtle wax too.. so gonna have to go check it out..
-
cheap and works as good as all the other stuff including autoglymn and armorall is wd40 on a rag
-
The green gunky stuff you mention is Makragel a really good trim and bumper gel .I got my last lot off ebay. It is German from a company called Makra ., would definately recommend .Use on my Mk111 GT1 and my RV8 .
-
Autoglym Bumper Care, which is a green gel type stuff.
I used it recently on my 'rado, and it got all the red polish stains off the side strips
-
Got a bottle of that. will try tomorrow
-
Kiwi Scuff black in a little squeezy bottle, with the spounge on top. Works very well, and is very cheap.
-
www.dizzie.biz/golf/sweet.jpg
see the results. it's awesome that autoglym stuff. works good on the tyres too!
-
Yep, I agree definatley Autoglym bumper stuff for a nice Black 'matt' bumpers. Use it on a dedicated cloth or sponge and the bottle lasts for ages. I use it on my tyres as well with good effect once a week.
The best value for money in my opinion as you don't waste anything with overspray everywhere, especially on a windy day!
-
cant believe no one has mentioned Meguiars products, i use there tyre gel on not just tyres but bumpers and trim aswell, it has lovely finish and lasts ages
-
http://www.wurth.co.uk/start.html
catalogue>workshop chemicals>plastic dye plast PT black etc
Wurth bumper dye
0893 280 1 black
0893 280 2 anthracite
this is the stuff to do your bumpers, find a local garage that gets wurth gear and ask em to order you a bottle with their next order other wise you'll pay stupid postage for one item.
think its about £16 a bottle but is superb and well worth it.
I'll post a pic when i've done me project car bumpers
HTH

I can honestly say I've never really found any decent stuff that lasts more than 3-4 weeks at best and the cheaper stuff comes off after the first wash.
Thats probably my problem as I always wash the car every week (sometimes twice a week) so I'm expecting the impossible.
I've just removed the whole kit from the car, Door Trims/Sill Covers/Wheelarch Spats/ and sprayed them Satin Black along with the black sections of the Bumpers and the Front Grille and now they look "as new".
It's a time consuming job as all the wheels have to come off to drill out the rivets and to replace them with new ones but its worth it in the end when you see the results, its always a good idea to T-Cut the car with the kit off before replacing everything. Its surprising as when everything is as Black as it should be it just seems to brighten up the whole car even making the paintwork look more shiny.
Jim.
-
Im surprised no one's mentioned good old Back 2 Black
Easy to apply cos its spray on, and lasts for a good 2-3 weeks in my experience
-
the back to black I have lasts about 2 minutes lol. It's in the bottle so a sod to put on. The autoglym stuff still looks as black as the day I put it on a couple of weeks ago :)
-
I got some of the autoglym stuff last week at Big Bang, havent tried it yet, but plan to later on today.
-
I've tried it, its the expensive stuff in the white trigger spray bottle if its the same stuff I bought. Its decent stuff and probably is as good as the best out there but the problem with 15-20 year old black plastic is it fades to grey (feel a song coming on) so when its applied you still have nice shiny *grey* plastics.
Spend a weekend and remove the whole Kit and get the as new look, its worth it.
Jim.
-
I only paid £4 for my bottle, so hardly expensive
-
I'm gonna be sorting the vast expanse of grey plastic on a KA soon. I've used scuff cote on my gti but don't fancy doing all the placcy on a KA with a 1 inch square applicator. So , which is best for a quick fix (selling it) for REALLY faded bits? to add to the problem some bits are faded more than others.
-
^^^ i'm telling you old engine oil!!!! did my dads vectra and it lasted ages, and you must know how crap vauxhall plastic goes!!!
-
TRY THIS, believe it or not the best thing to use is a heat gun. Run it over all the plastics, i did it about 4 months ago to my mk3. It amazing. And its perminant. Just give it a try, you wont regrate it.
-
I still swear by autoglym bumper care, the gel stuff in a bottle not the spray one. I don't like any kind of spray stuff as it's impossible to get on without covering your freshly polished paintwork all around the plastics. The gel stuff on a kitchen sponge goes on easy and lasts quite a while.
Joe while I don't doubt that used engine oil does a grand job surely after it's been raining you end up with streaks of dirty engine oil all down the sides of your car. I understand used engine oil has a certain acidity to it, that can't be good for paintwork???
-
my lil bro brought some of that green gel from autoglym home - its mint! gts rid of polsih marks and is fine on paintowrk... brill stuff def rate it. bout £5.99 from halfords...when i have to buy my own....
-
Autoglym bumper care the green gunky stuff is really good but doesn't seem to last too long I've used Autosmart before and that stuff is the shiznit it's what all the trade valeters use and its damn cheap £8.00 for a 5 ltr bottle and spraygun but you have to know someone in the trade :(
-
yeh used autoglym on my bumpers yesterday. they have sort of faided today in the sun.
turtle wax tyre gel works better imo
-
i used injention moulding release agent, silicone based i think, i am unfortunalely unable to steal this from work anymore! but it really worked a treat, deepening the black, giving a waterproof barrier and each time it was done it got easier and easier, like it was conditioning the plastic, there is also a spray called 'sprill' made by IWS, this is very similar and works just the same.
-
Next time you see an autoglym van at a dealership, go say hello. I got 5ltrs of the green bumper care stuff for £20. Usually £5.99 for 500ml. Total saving = £39.99. Bargain!
I get super resin polish (the best stuff available) for £20 too.
It does help that i work at a dealership
-
meguires trim detailer is fooking great on trims but does come of witht he rain etc... but use it enough and the trims will gleam and look great
-
I just did mine in autoglym bumper care and they look brand new for another few days :D
-
Don't know if its generally available but I use stuff called ChemSil.
Its a silcone based lubricant, used in loads of factories and food based applications, spray on wipe off, bumpers are black and shiny and it repels water. lasts for weeks and best of all I get it for for nothing!!!
-
"Carplan" do some stuff called black trim wax, it's the nuts, it's like turtle wax, you wax it on, and buff it off, keeps em lookin mint for ages, as a quick cheap alternative, baby oil is sound, and takes 2 secs....
-
Well did mine at the weekend with autoglym and the rain yesterday has sent them grey :( need some bumper dye stuff me thinks autoglym looks a bit sticky as well if you leave it on.
-
KIWI shoe polish has lasted month on mine! and it's only £1.45 or somehting
-
...Yep Kiwi shoes polish works VERY well and lasts ages
-
I used some Turtle wax extrememe cockpit and bumper shine stuff, works wonders and lasts for ages but its a F****r to get off your paintwork.
-
I always use the autoglym bumper care stuff, it comes up looking really nice but doesnt last all that long. I was chatting to a guy who works in a shoe shop and he's always used black heel spray on his bumpers, he got me a can of the stuff but I have yet to try it, apparently it works wonders and lasts, I'll give it a go and let you know the results!!!
-
Just got some new side strips and arches from Fleabay and need some plastic dye type stuff to make it really black before it goes on my car any ideas anybody?????
-
*smiles to himself*
im so glad i had everything smoothed and painted, all i have to do is give my wheels a quick coat in back to black and im away :)
-
fielder...

''Well i just wash and go''

-
olive oil might be worth a try!
As someone mentioned earlier, i've been told that using a heat gun is the best method as it actually lifts the polymers back to the surface of the plastic, thus making them good as new again!
-
iv just got some black kiwi polish, goin to give mine a look this avo!
-
Put some Simoniz Back To Black stuff on the plastic bits the other day, have washed it since and it's still got a nice finish. Does seem to create some black dust on the bumpers though. Time will tell how long it will be before I have to reapply it.............
