Title: RNS510 Problem
Post by: irknight on 01 July 2011, 11:10
Initially posted this on the Audio forum but was wonder if any you guys had encountered this.

I may have bricked my RNS 510 .... basically the story so far is.

I put the DVD with the firmware in, it rebooted the system, it showed the VW Nav screen loading with the setup info (red stripes top and bottom of screen) but then it did nothing, it now just conintually starts and restarts showing only a white screen. It does this in cycles, even when i am driving. I didn't get any gateway errors and I didn't even get to the part where it asks you the yes|no question of wether you want to continue with the upgrade.

I've tried disconnecting the power for over an hour but it's still in the same state.  Worst part, I can't get the disk out to recover with old firmware.

Anyone know what to do in this situation ? :-(

or

Does anyone want to buy a bricked RNS 510 ? :-(

Don't know if you have seen THIS (http://www.my-gti.com/1986/volkswagen-rns-510-swl-recovery-cd-for-gateway-error-202-or-boot-problems) but it involves getting the CD out and this version in.

Have you tried rebooting the unit by holding down the left and right buttons and the i button.

Quite a few suggestions on Google, have you had a look?

http://www.vagcommunity.com/forum/showthread.php?73-CD-wil-niet-uitwerpen-RNS510&language=en

reckons VAG.com will make the player eject the CD

That's great got a few guys from Scotland!

I went in and had a chat with the dealer, I am hoping they will at least be able to get the disk out for me and then I can retry installing the old firmware!

All else fails looks like I'll be buying a new unit, anyone selling one ? :-)

If you do need a replacement speak to 'N13KKF' I recently bought a Version C LED RNS510 and the service was superb, he is all over the R32 owners club website if you wanted to check him out first.  I'd recommened him every time.

The unit cost £550 plus postage, I paid a local fitter £30 to fit it, you could do it youreself its quite easy but you do need VAGCOM for somr coding.

Cheers,

Jim

Also Darren (Mortygt140) - another guy with a top notch reputation

Wow - Dealer just replaced my unit under warranty, I will never ever say a bad word against them ever again in my life

Lesson Learned : Leave the Firmware alone unless you have the proper to tools/equipment to fix it when it goes wrong.  I've spoke to a lot of people the past few days - vw navi guys, dealer technician and they all say they are fragile beasts.
