Title: GTD MUD FLAPS
Post by: fazz on 30 June 2011, 22:45
Just collected my new GTD, just wanted to know if its worth getting the mud guards on, the dealer wanted around £90 for them and about £90 for fitting, it it worth it?

Personally I would say no way. Others will disagree! In my mind, they spoil the looks in return for offering sod all protection. And the 90 quid fitting is a joke! They are easy enough to DIY.

They are dead easy to fit in around 10 mins per side - I have them on the front of mine and they seem to work well

If you don't mind the looks its worth it on the front imo as the sides of the car get dirty very quickly even with just a slight dampness on the road. Worse than any other car ive owned for this.

But sorry imo £90 fitting is a p1ss take they are simple as simple can be to fit.

Always the last deal clincher, right at the end, always had them chucked in as part of a deal, never paid for them on my last 5 cars!

I had them for protection down the sills as I keep my cars for a long time.

According to the VW Accessory brochure they are front - 5K0 075 111 - £64, rear - 5K0 075 101 - £64. You can get genuine ones of eBay cheaper golf mk 6 mud flaps (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A4908&rt=nc&_nkw=golf+mk+6+mud+flaps&_dmpt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=2&_sc=1).

They are easy to fit so its not worth paying the dealer £90. But if your bothered about the looks then don't have them its as simple as that?

The GTI is a fast shopping trolly and not a rally rouser. Looks odd and ugly with those mini beef curtains.
Those hangings probably do not help the aerodynamics either.

As said before, £90 fitting is a joke.

I've got a set still in the box that I haven't got round to fitting yet. I'm putting it off because I'm debating whether or not to fit Blue Motion side skirts. However, so far the car has stayed fairly clean without them. What mudflaps do help with is tar spots and I'm starting to pick up a few of them, so I better pull my finger out and decide what to do.

Would i have to take the wheel off to install them also, are the holes already there for installation

It makes it easier, but jacking it up should be sufficient.

They are mostly held on with the archliner screws, but you do need to make some holes in the underside of the bumper for self tappers for the rear ones. However when you have them secured with the arch liner screws, it will be apparent where these screws need to go.

Hi...

I bought and fitted these myself, very easy to do. Jacking up one side at a time, then removing both wheels and then follow the instructions inside the box. All the holes are there apart from the ones used to fix them to the underneath of the rear bumper.
Make sure you get the correct ones as there is a set for the golf basic and another for the GTI/GTD.
IMHO they really suit the car, but others will disagree...

I love those alloys and for some reason the mudflaps seem to suit the overall look of that car.

I wouldn't want to fit those alloys on my car though incase someone thinks I own a GTD

Just noticed the title - GTD mudflaps.

In that case mud flaps are most suitable.

A friend of mine had a mk1 GTD many years ago, he was/is a farmer, he loved it as he could use the farm's diesel which was really, really cheap. Not legal now, I know.

He also told me he liked the sound of the engine.

Reminded him of work.......

True

Fazz. If you haven't yet got the flaps for the GTD,the item No's are:-

Front 5K0 075 111
Rear  5K0 075 105  (my box stated Gti, so they must be the same!)

Fitted them recently....
All screws etc are included, but you will need a couple of Torx bits 20 and 25 IIRC. a pair of grips (adjustable pipe grips are just the thing!) to tighten the clamps on the front flaps (with something to put between the grips and the bodywork so as not to damage paint etc) small extension for the torx bits for the rear flaps, a 10mm spanner and some tape to hold the - nut in the spanner under the bodywork front n rear/20mm torx screws to the bit whilst getting them in the recess on the rear flaps. Also, either a rubber headed hammer or a hammer + piece of wood to get the clamps on the rear flaps (with the inside of your knee up against the rear valence whilst you smack those clamps in! Ooh Matron...)

Fronts - can be done whilst car on the ground with opposite lock applied (bit fiddly, but not too bad).

Rears - really need to remove each rear wheel in turn.

If you're going to jack the car up and remove a wheel, then Don't forget to use an axle stand or similar for safety's sake!!! There's nothing quite like a car falling on your head to put a damper on your afternoon!

Yeah Keith weird isn't it! I was looking down the eBay route to purchase mine and got confused (ain't that hard nowadays!) but messaged a VW dealer who was selling non gti/d flaps on the bay and I thought "OK, I'll leave it to him/her to send me what I need - gave him my GTD chassis No and he/her sent me what I've stated..... I'd like to see the difference between 101's and 105's tho...  :undecided:

Gti *MODELS* is 105, which I assume includes the GTD.... wherever I've seen a GTD for sale at a VW dealer, it's always come under the banner of 'Gti'

No. The rear bumper on the GTI/D are the same apart from the central diffuser, so you're dealer is talking crap.
