Title: Replacing Back box and front indcators/blanking covers question
Post by: CM690 on 30 June 2011, 19:39
I want to replace my standard back-box on my 1.4 CL mk3 but I'm not too sure what I need to look for when buying a new one.. :P

Will most/any universal fit or is there something special I need?

What size is the pipe connecting to the backbox on a mk3?

any loss in performance if I get a cheap one?...

No laughing at my idiocy I'm new to this

Thanks guys!

also a quick question about the front indicators and blanking covers on the front bumper. I brought some lens tinting spray and wondered how I can get the len's off of these parts.. Will I just need to prize them off and then stick them back on with some form of sealant?

I would buy one designed for the mk3 otherwise your be messin about making up mounts that fit , vr6/gti use a larger pipe than your 1.4/1.6 , I fitted a gti spec performance exhaust and had to chop the back box off , weld a scaffold tube on the remaining pipe end , then the gti box fitted on the scaffold tube (sleeve) no drama if you have a ramp /welder your your be on te floor pissin about all day

Blanking covers, get your hand up the bumper release the clips holding the unit in , and tape around it and spray the exterior of the lense then re-fit is the lazy way (works as well ) but look on

Easier to remove the indicators tbh.

I tried and tried and tried to separate the lenses from the holder but failed miserably so in the end I just gave it a few coats of the paint on the outside and left it to dry for a while.

Must admit... I'm pretty pleased with the result

They do look a little dark.

Bet the indicators are a bit difficult to see. Would you be better off just having your fog blanks sprayed and getting some tinted indicators off fleabay?

Testers are pretty strict on indicators, safety related item.

Reminds of a time many years ago when a mate of mine tinted the windows of his talbot sunbeam by spraying the inside of the windows, then couldn't see out.
