I have had many Golfs in my time, MK2, MK3 and a MK4. I decided to buy a Datsun
Nissan 350Z car because It was the car I always wanted as a kid playing GT3. Long story why I sold it but part of it was I got cold feet and came back to zee germans. Went to look and an A3 and ended up with a A4 S-Line nice example FSH. Paid off the outstanding finance on the 350Z with the sale of the MK2 Oaky so was freeee to buy.
Most sensible thing I have done in a while according to the other half! (Feb last year she told me not to buy any more cars till after the wedding and since then I may have had 3 or 4 possibly) So a reliable diesel was a good start.
Here it is when I went to the show room. Couldn't believe the price! Couldn't fault it. HPI'ed checked with a fellow VW mechanic.

Rotiform's I like them...a lot.

Coilovers are on and what a ball of a job! Had to remove the whole hub as the pinch bolts were put in the wrong way thus creating a bit of a tight squeeze problem. All done at 12.30am then had the pleasure to drive it back to Bournemouth
Only had one problem...well two. One was the wheel alignment was all to pot, so much so it squealed going round roundabouts. Another being the crappy budget WANLI tyre had lots of tread left but was distorted on the inner edge causing what sounded like a wheel bearing gone. All sorted now, 100% perfect no nocking or rubbing. Pictures of the car later when I clean it.

Haha Did someone have a frantic phone call from MR Doc after that comment?
The two months without the car Im not going to lie were hard. Going from an Audi to a MK3 GTi was a shock to my system, you come a custom to the little nice features of a newer car. In all fairness I knew It was not going to be a quick job. Craig and Nick both kept me updated and assured me everything was going peachy including telling me they were "impressed with the size of my shaft" Constant dyno graphs were sent to me just to keep me on edge. I took the train from Bournemouth to Manchester at 9am to get there at just gone 3pm..5 hours on the same train was a killer but I knew it would be worth it.
Something I'v picked up about Carbon Chip Tuning is they do what they do due to love of the job. They will strive to get things right the first time regardless of the amount of sleep Nick looses (Sorry pal :( ) The motor has had just over 300+ dynos as there was a problem with requesting more than 1.7bar of boost. Nick in all his wisdom sorted that problem. I think he was being a little harsh on himself about the end results. I can not describe the knowledge Nick knows about what he does. If anyone does decide to go down there, be assured you are in safe hands.
Now to the main topic, the motor. I had a pick up service from Craig at the station then we went straight to CCT HQ (This place is nothing like you have seen before, its massive) The work on the car was, One off Hybrid Turbo, DE-DPF, EGR-Delete nothing like this has been seen on an A4 that we can find. So how does the car drive? Like no other! How Nick managed to get it to drive like a petrol with the torque of a diesel I will never know. It's always got the power there when you need it! Me and Craig had a little sprint down the motorway just to be sure I was happy with the car, and boy was I. The difference was night and day, it doesn't run out of steam like most diesels do. Ask the Audi TT driver on the M6, he wasn't a happy bunny. Smoke is present but not at all like what It was like on my Golf MK4 TDI. I'm sure the Audi would of had no problems pulling away from my 350Z on the motorway it just pulls and pulls, change gear, pulls and pulls! The sound it makes was described to me as a "tight owl".....The turbo is quite audible and highly addictive! I used a 1/4 of a tank from Manchester to Bournemouth! How?!
I can not thank Nick and Craig enough for the service they carried out! If you accept the challenge, I have another car lined up in the next year or two
I will post a graph when I fix the scanner.... :undecided:
-
Ace mate, I'll ask Nick to send you the graph over

Yep! We were both on a "private" road. I joined and accelerated, he came up and moved over to over take. I decided I wasn't having any of that, so left my foot planted firmly down. Beauty of "private" roads, no speed limits to worry about. We got to over 100 and he still couldn't get past. In the end I stopped accelerating and let him past, didn't want to be a complete nob

350z are slow to be fair weighing around 1500-1600kg, not really an impressive car for something with a v6 and 280ish bhp which is over quoted slightly. The torque and power delivery of a turbo levels the playing field compared to bigger N/A engine on this car. Plus being in a 350z I thought they where no thrill, nice looking car but plain slow and they are no longer that pricey, but I wouldn't get one.

Plus being in a 350z I thought they where no thrill, nice looking car but plain slow and they are no longer that pricey, but I wouldn't get one.
The 350Z does pull it's own weight trust me, wouldn't say "plain slow" by any means. Weight is the same-ish of the Audi at 1400kg. At the prices they go for atm I would love to pick an early one up and charge it  The thrill is the sound and the wet roundabouts on my "private road".
-
Pfffff, my 1.8t can already beat a 350z, I shoud hope your A4 would absolutely muller one!,
A 1.8T beat a 350z...

I know what you mean, its not slow as it is a quick car, but it should be faster, it didn't feel any different to a mk4 golf for me (except handling) as I was looking at getting a coupe and I tried one of these out only to be let down. The 2.0TSI engines in the s3 and leon cupra are a hell off a lot faster than this car which got me thinking of what's the point of it, which is what really let me down, when you considered that these where made all the way up to 09. Plus a lot of the nissan boys moan about the figures especially on the 300bhp models and how they are just technically mapped up, but when thrown on dyno's they turned out to be well under tuned from the brochure figures.
Had it come with a turbo or a super it would of been a hell lot more fun.

They have about 240bhp at the wheels, transmission losses are a killer for them. 0-60 at 5.8 seconds using a mates box of tricks. For me I bought one for the fun...then the fun ran out every time I visited the pump. You really cant get a 2 seater, RWD, v6, and the spec for that money.

They are cheap as chips for the price they do go at with a nice interior, but it wasn't my cup of tea after trying it.
Whilst on A4's, regarding TDI, what the 2.5-2.7-3.0TDI engines like, I know pumps seem to be main issue but running costs seem quite good?

Terrible around town, not too bad on a run but nothing like you get from the 1.9 and 2.0 TDIs
And if it goes wrong

Basically I'm better off getting a 2.0 and 1.9, as I did love the sound of the 3.0 with a miltek system.

If you are to buy one get the 140 2.0 TDI

Mainly because it's EDC16 based and DPf free

Red was power just a DPF friendly remap that he had from Rhys and the blue is with the DPF removal, EGR delete and Hybrid turbo.

And once you've got there you'll be moving on to the next goal posts and then the next etc etc :lipsrsealed:

i also think maybe a lottt of money for little gain ? or will it make it much more nicer to drive ?

I wanted reliable power. Key word being reliable. The old turbo had a bit of play in the shaft, it was not an option in my mind to keep the old unit on there with an indetermate life. There is more power to be had. It is certainly more responsive and I enjoy it more knowing I have the piece of mind it's not going to go pop any time soon
And who said it was a lot of money?

Why did it go to Audi and what happened
Well, put it this way I filled the road up with white smoke and took a good while to clear. Audi Yeovil had the car to replace the injectors as it was a known problem. I was told they were all replaced. I then had the car in Audi to do some work and while it was there they out of good will checked the injectors and found three were replaced and one "faulty" one was still in situ!? They then replaced the remaining "faulty" injector but messed it up by not replacing a seal properly
I have had to battle with them this morning as they tried to place it to the engine being overfilled with oil. 12L was drained out of the engine!!!! I then told them to check the oil to see whether it was pure oil or if it had and contaminants i.e Diesel in there. Got a call back saying "Good news Sir, you were right" :smug: A classic case of bore washing. So now they are replacing both intercoolers and bits.

Can anyone tell me if bore wash can cause any major damage to the internals?

Well update; Audi UK have just received a 1500 word essay with introduction of problem, conclusion, concerns and an appendix with suitably referenced information using the Harvard Reverencing System.
Ball is in your court now Audi.

Might they not come back to you and say you ballsed it up with the mods you've done to the car? :undecided:

They admitted liability that the injector was incorrectly fitted causing the problem. It's got the standard map on there atm.

refundddddddddd
For what exactly?

How long did you run it with the f**ked injector?

Well picked up the car at 5.30± and at about 6 it died. Less than 3 miles down the road approximately 7.75L of diesel got into my oil...

Audi are going to go over the engine to check bearings and seals and replace if necessary. Also offering me a 2 year warranty on the engine for anything attributed to this oil dilution.

What has gone wrong now.

Loosing coolant and smoking white on startup.
Been told they are going to do a comprehensive report and send it to Audi UK.
Sorry but I have lost faith in Audi now.

Thats anoying :(
Get another golf. There the best. Who wants a 'posh' golf anyway... :undecided:

Well its currently being stripped down. They are being strange about wanting to admit fault and stand by the warranty they gave me.
Can someone tell me what causes high oil pressure? Viscosity of the oil?

Stuck relief valve or blocked oil gallery

Balls. Never mind. Wasn't Audi's fault. Crack in no3 cylinder head exhaust port.

sh!t a brick! I'm assuming he told them where to go?

£2440 for the privilege and that's with a discount of good will.
No signes of wear in the engine block which is a good sign I suppose :undecided:
Not down to mods. So the only thing on that engine that hasn't been replaced is the block now. So in the past 6 months of ownership I have worked out I have spent a good part of £5000 on it
-
Should have kept the mk4. . . . .
-
Sorry to hear bud, mate had a similar issue with the mk2 LCR with the 2.0tfsi engine found in the s3 as well, non stop issues like you non mod related in the end they had to give him a new block under warranty.

dam! time for the car to be " stolen" offf the drive  :lipsrsealed:

All sorted now! Well will be tonight once I pop another revision of the map on it.

I hope they used a condom and Vaseline after raping you by that much... ouch

The umbrella was swiftly up ones arse dry it felt.

I thought they were paying as they didn't do it right the first time around and ruined your engine? :undecided:

Gutted for ya Adam,

Seriously, I've no idea why you agreed to pay that for the work. You could have bought a replacement engine for less!
Gutted though mate
Couldn't go anywhere cheaper?

The issue I faced was I assumed it was related to the cock up the month prior there for assumed the warranty covered it. I was wrong :( If I wanted to take it somewhere else they would have had to put back the dud cylinder head charging me for the diagnostics costs at 5*£90. They didn't charge me for removal, kindly gave me trade price and reduced labor cost.
Whats saying a second hand replacement engine wouldn't cock up down the line.

Gutting mate
Guess she's a keeper now though mind you?!

Get a Passat. They have a little more leg room than the A4's, meaning you can keep the little one in a rear facing seat longer and any rear seat passengers will have a bit of extra space, and you're not paying a premium for the badge. I was looking at A6's but the Passat's made more sense - same spec level or better and cost less.
