Post by: Perfect 8 on 08 April 2005, 13:36
Can anybody please give me a pointer as to what i need to do to replace my CV joint (Inner and Outer).
I've done one before several years ago but my memory evades me as to what i need to do to swap it.

Cheers

 Me personally i'd change the whole shaft as much cheaper (secondhand) as the inner will cost you the best of £50 to start with and are a complete pain in the arse to change. To change the whole shaft you will have to first crack the driveshaft nut whilst the car is still on the ground (197 Lbs of torque) then undo the 6 spline bolts at the gearbox end (30 Lbs of torque),release the bottom ball joint or the 3 bolts holding the ball joint to the bottom arm and the track rod end from the hub, you will then have enough space to pull the hub out and release the end of the shaft from the hub..............to refit as they say in all the books is a reversal of what you have just done!! Where about are you as i have 2 setsof both sides spare and am in Herts. Have fun, Joe

i'd do what ^^ he said then when they are out give 'em a good clean up and replace what you need. can't see the point in using second hand parts for things like these. better to spend out and be safe in the knowledge that you're not going to have to do them again for a while.

i wouldn't use second hand driveshaft you dont know how worn the c.v joints are so in 12 months time you could be in the same

spot. I changed mine two months ago, not a big job, just allow yourself plenty off time. you'll need plenty of rags, circlip pliers,

spanner and sockets, jemmy bar( bottom ball joint can be a git). Get a haynes and work from that slowly. change your boots while

the jonts are off

oh and break all the wheel nuts and hub nut while the car is on the ground

You don't need to touch the bottom balljoint to get the driveshaft out, separate the hub to strut, but mark it before removing.

Thanks for the advice.

Joe,

Are these parts new you have? Are they suitable for a 1.8 8v GTi?

Thanks & Regards
Adam

You don't need to touch the bottom balljoint to get the driveshaft out.

or use circlip pliers, as they're held in place by a 'c' clip in the end of the shaft. Again I wouldn't use second hand parts, as you don't know the condition of the joints until you've fitted it, and if it's pooped you'll have to go through the whole process again.
