Why oh why cant i have an AUX point fitted to the standard unit in my '06' GTI ? As i would love to be able to plug my Ipod in.
I had the Ipod connection fitted to the car by VW and its complete sh!te...
Do any of you guys know a way round this as VW have said the only way to do it is to get a whole new unit, they promptly directed me to a new Kenwood unit at a whopping £1000.00.....

I had a standard Vw stereo in my Gti , I also wanted to Plug my ipOd or I phone in , I looked down the route of getting a new Vw unit , but in the end I put a 7" DVD player in , with aux port built in , plus they supplied a lead for my iPhone !!! Happy days !! Set up my DVD player to play while moving too !!! So I have it all in one !!! And all for £ 125 !!!!!! All off a well known auction site !!!!! :smug: deano lfc

I have a Connects2 Aux-In kit. It cost me ~£20 in 2008. It connects to the cd changer port on the back of the headunit and has an aux input lead. The headunit thinks a cd changer is connected but the audio is coming from your ipod. You can't control it through the headunit but it's not a big deal imo as you can rest your mp3 player on the ashtray and it's perfectly accessible. I'll take a photo of my set up later on :afro:

Thanks lads as im miffed at not being able to have my ipod in the car, look forward to seeing the pics.
And i must stress that im not bothered at all at having to use the ipod controls itself rather than the head unit.

Another option could be a Dension kit
http://www.dension.com/products
I've got one in my Audi and I can run a USB stick / MP3 player off it  Best feature is you can use the steering wheel controls (if you have them) to change tracks etc
-
Thanks mate,i still cant believe that you cant get an AUX point from the original unit.....
-
i wired mine from the radio into one of the blanks in front of the radio.
cost me less than £10 for bits and a couple of hours of my time.

That is what I ended up doing. I didn't regret it though as the unit was great.
The RCD310, 510 and RNS 510 units can all be used with the VW MDI interface, but I don't think you can retro-fit the MDI interface to an RCD300 or 500.

You can get an Aux in, but it comes as part of the arm rest. I have the ipod dock in the arm rest but it also has an aux in socket on the front. I have the RCD 300 head unit with a parrot handsfree and it all works off the steering wheel.

that was 2007 onwards.
Aux in was not fitted before that unless you buy te kit that replaces the glove box light

Sorry man I completely forgot about the pictures :embarassed: I took some yesterday. The little box of tricks plugs into the back of the headunit. I fed the aux input down the centre console and out of the blanks in the ashtray. There's just a hole there at the moment. I had a blank with a hole and a grommet but I lost it :lipsrsealed:

I find it really easy to reach and change tracks. There's enough length in the cable to bring it close to you. Handy for when the passenger is hunting for a song.

Cheers bud. Thats exactly what I had planned to do with the blank too. Was going to drill a hole in one of the blanks and a fit a connector in place.
I've read on other forums (here (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2613986)) how to dismantle the gearbox trim and ashtray to get access to the button blanks. Tried to pull off the gearbox trim last night and it didn't want to budge. Any tips on how to get it off without busting it ?

I slide a credit card/id card/any thin plastic card between the edge of the gearstick trim and the ashtray trim. It's very tight at first but if get the card to slide in then you can pull up and forward and it will pop out. It is quite tight at first though.

cool. I have some proper trim tools so will give it a proper go next time and hopefully end up with something along the lines of this (but with a 3.5mm headphone jack) in the button blanks http://volkswagenownersclub.com/vw/showthread.php/7377-Usage-of-blank-switch-covers?s=a8a7595f57d4013154a4fd6ccf27825e (http://volkswagenownersclub.com/vw/showthread.php/7377-Usage-of-blank-switch-covers?s=a8a7595f57d4013154a4fd6ccf27825e)
