Not if it's SORN - Only if it's taxed is what I've understood from it.

Or... there's some way of declaring it officially off road or something...

think so!!
me mum phoned me the other day having a right panic about me and mine :D
to be honest, no word by email or post from any authoroties to sorned car owners, so i think you could plead ignorance...
bit stupid and a bit of a money spinner in my opinion!

To be fair I watch a lot of TV and the only reason I knew of this law was because of this forum.

As a matter of interest, how does this affect selling your car?

I am picking up my new motor next week, and will update my current policy for the new car.

of course then, the old car isn't insured...but it could only be parked for a few weeks.

So do I need to SORN, or is it more a case of going after people who have been uninsured on a taxed car for quite a while?

I'm in the same boat! I bought a Mk4 last week so changed the insurance over from my Mk3. I don't want to declare it sorn because I don't want to sell it as SORN, yet I don't want a hefty fine through the post for having no insurance.

The numpty that thought of this idea really didn't think it through

well let me know how you get on, I am liable to be in the same boat, but I will just stick the new one on a 14 day policy to see me thru

It's been uninsured for a week now and i'm getting a little uneasy about it all tbh. I need to pull my finger out and actually make an effort to sell it

Wanna buy a mk3 Chuff?

Put the MK3 on the policy as a temporary additional vehicle.

That's a good idea...didn't really think of asking to add a second car as a temp measure. I am sure Admiral will have my eyeballs for that little extra

It's going to be next weekend, so I will update this with what the insurers say.

I do see the logic behind it as a way to combat insurance fraud...but to me, if someone doesn't care enough to bother with insurance, whats to say they are going to bother with tax?

I read that they would only persue car owners who had an uninsured but taxed vehicle for quite a long time...but that was just a random page on the web which I can't find again...so I've taken that with a pinch of salt.

The whole thing takes the Mick.  For those selling a car its going to be a real pain in the ass... What's the point of it exactly?

the point is to stop people taking out a policy, Taxing a car, cancelling a policy, driving un-insured.

I can see their reasons for doing it, if a cars taxed, its gotta be insured, but its still a PITA
