Post by: billy_vw on 27 June 2011, 13:02
Right - Alot more than i wanted to spend,

But

I have chance of buying a 1 owner mk5 GTi

Pluses are:

1 owner from new
FSH & all receipts from new
200 bhp ( standard so far)
Full leather - heated fronts

Luxury pack

Negs to me any way - it's RED and highish miles

Any advice on buying 1 of these would be much appreciated

im sure some of them are still awaitng their recalls.

This one has been re-called on coil packs (if that's what you mean)

Check if the steering rack has been replaced too; should have been done under warranty if it was a creaky one

Check the front wheel arches for corrosion - caused by the plastic wheelarch liner rubbing against the inner surface of the wheelarch flange.

Some owners who've experienced this have had problems getting it fixed under the corrosion warranty; VW have cited this as a mechanical problem(!)  - link to threads in the mk5 section with pictures of the problem below.

I've a mk5 which is just over 4 years old and I've not had the problem.

Yes - high MOTORWAY miles

But full & i mean FULL service history with 1 owner

The guy sometimes does 350 miles a day with work, but with fuel prices hes just bought a mk6 GTD

The car is very high spec, drives like a dream

& if it had average mileage like 50-60k with the spec would be around £8.5k

Personally , Id rather keep £3k in my bank and enjoy a  well maintained car with a few more miles.

It will keep me happy for a while,

Well it has got tax til March next year

Good find.

But I don't know how getting £5400 for a car and spending £25,000 or so on a MK6 GTD is financially any better than the fuel prices

Hopefully this is one of the good ones,
But with 115k, at least it has been motoring and not in & out of a garage breaking down.

Picking it up 2nite
