if i turn the wheel with out any gas i get a squealing sound come from the wheels any ideas ? power
steering fluid is full ?
thanks

is it at full lock, if so you might just be putting the steering pump under alot of pressure
-
sorry no not under full lock i would say about half lock ?

Worn power steering belt, easy & cheap enough to change

is it an easy job to do at home ?
i suppose i best find a haynes manual ?

Yeah you can do it at home its easy enough to but if you can get hold of an haynes manual then would be easier

I got this problem and the power steering fluid is full, so i'm guessing I need the same part. I found this but it says vr6 non-air-con. How toes the power sterring belt affect the air-con. And i'm guessing it won't be compatible with a 1.6 cl - correct me if i'm wrong

Models with aircon have a longer belt

Ahh cheers Dom, will keep looking then

check the belt for wear first. if it looks ok just tighten it up from the tensioner. easy job!
-
Or if its doing it in the wet then your just spraying the belt with water from your wheel... also common
-
be sure to tell them if your motor has power steering when buying a new one, but also try adjusting the belt first, as said above.

hi all
still have not done this job but i need to get it done as i think its getting worse ?

Just put the new belt on the same way the original went on... take a picture of how the old one goes on for refference. But yeah a guide could still be useful. I'm going to do this job soon as well.

It tells you in this guide.
Its a piece of pi$$ really. Slide under car, remove splash guard. Loosen 2 10mm bolts. Loosen the 17mm bolt (i think its 17mm). Couple of gentle taps with a hammer will swing the pump back and forth. Remove belt, put new one on, and in true haynes style, refitting is the reversal of removal.
Small engined golfs are a bit different, as the main serpentine belt on those runs everything. On those, you whack a spanner on the auto adjuster to loosen it, and pull belt off. Then reverse it.
Job done

If you've got a haynes its page 2B7 its called an Auxiliary V-belt which is why you might not be able to find it. I need to change mine and my ribbed belt.

Different on your model sir. Assuming you have the AEE 1.6 engine. They're under £20 from VW. Just a case of hold a 15mm (I THINK) spanner and tun the tensioner (springloaded) away, take off the belt, put the new belt on.
The tension is automatic.
