What do you all think of these? I know we had a thread on this a week or so ago but it goes in for its 2nd service in a couple of weeks and just wondered what you all made of all the rust on the hubs. They've been rusting since before their first birthday to be honest but surely they shouldn't be doing this. And what makes it worse is that all 4 Monzas are spotless - not a curbing scratch in sight in 2 years and 20k miles so I've looked after them.
Have I got a case for them being replaced or is it a "they all do that" job? (The first 2 are the fronts by he way, the other two the backs).

Sorry the first three have come out the wrong way round but if you tilt your head you can see them clearly.
And also, by the way, I've had a little go with the wire wool but the rust ain't budging

spray paint them silver! myn have bin done.

I take it it's the hubs you're not happy with, rather than the Monzas. Mine are heading that way after 1 year. I was going to rub them down at some point and smooth hammerite them silver again

The part thats gone rusty is part of the brake disc, my brothers Roc had this from very early on, when he took it back they said it's very common and showed him several examples on the used car forecourt and as such would not be replaced under warranty.
Mine are just starting to go but as others have said they can be wire brushed and painted silver, either that or get some new discs! :smiley:

I work at a vw dealership and have seen a few customers come in with the same rust vw will not do anything about it. Not under warranty best thing you can do is paint it.

Cheers for the info Evo. I've got to say this'll be the first car I've ever had to paint over the rust on whilst it's still under warranty!!!!
Off to the Wheel Specialists methinks.

All cars rust there due to the heat from the disc. It just easier to see on the mk6 due to the offset. Just rub it with some sand paper or a wire brush and paint it. You don't need a wheel specialist as its not part of the wheels, its part of the brake disc.
Mk5's suffer this too and there will be many threads with step by step guides on how to do this on here and other forums.

When I got my new alloys this was one of the first jobs.
Mask the face of the disc and the caliper then spray with MATT Hammerite smooth aerosol. Two coats and they are sorted.
No need to sand as the Hammerite will bond to the corrosion as designed to.
This was also the same on my previous cars so
not just a VW issue.

This was also a very common complaint with the Mk 5 too :sad:
It's a bit surprising that VW hav'nt improved things with the Mk 6.

had this on my merc after 2 months from new.. they painted them FOC..
if you go the dealer.. give them the situation of..
if the rust comes off, flys down the side of the car and sticks to the surface and then rusts the bodywork from the outside in... i'll be back...
quick fix now to eliminate a major claim later on is what you need to point out to them.. get a guy who has his head screwed on for business and he will soon approve it.

That's a bit far fetched isn't it? How is rust getting onto the outside of the paint going to start corrosion of the bodywork? Not to mention the fact that the rusty areas are behind the wheel and under the wheel arch. No dealer in his right mind would buy that one.

The dealer probably thought he was dealing with a nutter so just wanted shot of him quick!
