this is my 6th gti, and its giving me gyp!
picked it up thursday, and had 1 (ds) window working, now i have none :( obviously not a fuse (?) its gotta be the hottest day of the year and kids wanna go out this afternoon?? any suggestions for a quick fix?
its
its a 97,mk3 16v gti
all suggestions muchly appreciated :)

First thing i'd check would be the drivers door window switch, is it a 2 or 4 door?
-
hia, thanks for the fast reply :) its a 4 dr
-
The switches to tend to wear out so if all 4 windows are not working, check drivers door switch first then fuses.
-
okkkay, so are u going to tell me how to do that lol. how do i take it off and what am i looking for?
-
just tried the DS again and when i pressed it really hard the window went down....no luck with the others tho.. maybe a fault in the loop somewhere?
taking the kids out now, will be back later to check for any suggestions, have a nice day all xxx
-
Gently prise out the switch with a flat blade screwdriver and have look to see if the plug is on tight, then unplug it and make sure the connectors are clean then replace, and see if it works, ideally you need a replacement to plug in and try because you could spend all day checking fuses and wiring but if that switch is broke the only easy way to sort it is to replace which should be cheap and easy from a breakers yard (not much help on a sunday i know).
-
A couple of links that may come in handy with your problem -
http://www.gtishrine.com/windowreg.php
Ok, make that one link cos I cant find the other.
Easy enough to do anyway, check the switch and fuses first though

HAHAHA love it!!
-
right ive taken off all the switches this is what i got
DS- light comes on with head lights
PS-light not coming on at all
osr-light comes on with headlights
nsr-light comes on with headlights
is this info any use?
-
Not really, no.
-
lol.. c'mon surely its an easy fix :(
-
here in south wales are you located?
-
im in Barry :)
i took the door cards off this afternoon, only to check for broken wires, checked all the fuses ( not relays) no evidence of anything snapped, but i'm determined to fix it, no matter how long it takes lol
-
arr if you were closer i would have happily taken a look but down in swansea not often up cardiff way
-
aww thats a shame :(
another issue i havent mentioned (im being bagged big time for buying a 'piece of junk' :( ) the key fob doesn't work..i have been to several shops lookig to get a new battery, but with no luck (its got a lip on the one thats in there now) would this have anything to do with the windows ?( all locks work with key) also ive told my insurers that it has an alarm.. but obviously thats not working at the moment :lipsrsealed:.. is this where i need to go direct to VW?
shelagh x
-
Have you tried opening and closing the windows with the key? If you hold the key in the lock/unlock position, all the windows should go up/down. Will help you rule out is a regulator or motor is busted
-
right i tried that, DS went down, and i could hear motor noise from the drivers rear side, but window didnt move
-
hia, thanks for the fast reply :) its a 4 dr
Its surprising how quick some respond when they hear you are female and blonde. If you were male fat and ginger you would never get a reply.
-
right i tried that, DS went down, and i could hear motor noise from the drivers rear side, but window didnt move
Sounds like the switch needs cleaning for you're drivers side window if it works freely on the key.
D/S rear you need to take the door card off and see if the window is sat properly in its mechanism and can move freely. Although the noise you heard could have been the vacuum pump.
No other windows twitched at all?
Check there is power to all the motors would be my next step.
-
i am fat and ginger but shhh i want this car fixed!
right got all the door cards off again, on the passenger side, the scart lead thing was off< re attched it, but my god its groaning! wont open more than about 3 inches either
back door (os) is only attempting to make any noise (clik)off the switch on the dash
driverside rear is making no noises at all.. think the noise i heard earlier was the locking mec :embarassed:
shelagh x
-
ok so im done in for one day, have put everything back together
window switch on DS upside down! locking motor going nuts in the boot and the back doors wont lock!
ah well, just hope my battery lasts the night :)
shelagh x
-
This all sounds like some botched alarm wiring.
-
no idea but im really pi$$ed about it :(
gonna disconnect the OS window again tomorrow and see if all goes back to 'normal'
-
just had a thought, if this is going to be a major job, how easy would it be to convert the window to manual winders?
-
just had a thought, if this is going to be a major job, how easy would it be to convert the window to manual winders?
Very easy! Just need to drill a little hole in the door card for the winder to poke through!
You will need to buy the manual winder units though, although they are alot cheaper than the leccy jobs.
I considered doing this a few times.
-
If its a choice between sorting out someone elses shonky wiring and going to manual winders to keep the car on the road, i'd go for arm power anytime.
-
OMG!! cheers, you've made my bloody day!!
no doubt i can get these at the scrappy!
everyone loves leccy but sheesh im done in from pissin about with them, i hope to have the car for a good few yrs to come, and 'winding'wont bother me :) :)
thanks again sir x
gavv too right! i dont have an issue looking cheap :D
-
Ok then , buy the manual unit, old one out, new one in, drill a hole in the door card and away you go. Simple swap.
Hmmm, thinking about it, I think you need to have the window half way down so that you can unclip the mech
-
Never been a fan of leccy windows myself, old car+harsh winter = all kinds of fun and games and i wouldn't like to meet someone who looked down on you because you have to wind your own windows down!, change to manual and post pictures on here and everyone will want them by next weekend
-
Plus, weight saving = faster car!
-
haha u lot dont want much eh!
sod the leccy if it had been suggested before id have done it.. lmao.. traffic lights, hot guy in the next car.. me winding hmmm lmao!!
easy all round, deffo gonna do it!!
god im excited :|
-
thanks to those that gave me hand this eve,,,xx
-
Shame your in Wales boyo as i would do you a swap for my keep fit window mechs.
Gimme a shout when theyre out and if you dont remove them with a hammer i will buy them off you
Ive got my loom just need switches and im away.

 @ boyo!!
cool

Might have switches at some point. Also might have regulators and motors, won't know til I do mine soon. Fingers croased it works this time! Third loom! The other two were 5 door tho.

Im getting rid of a load of mk3 stuff atm so let me know if you require anything.

Cd.A is the drag coefficient x frontal area, and gives a better idea of aerodynamics than just Cd.
Mk 1 Cd.A = 0.83
Mk 2 Cd.A = 0.70
Mk 3 Cd.A = 0.66
Mk 4 Cd.A = 0.70
Mk 5 Cd.A = 0.76
I think you'll find the mk3 is less brick like than the mk2 and mk4.

Brilliant (although the MK2 was alot faster than the MK3). I'm going to buy a MK3 VR6 in that case.

What like an F1 car? Those figures, a MK3 isn't realisically any more aerodynamic than a MK4 (certainly not as a road car) and they're certainly not quicker.
I could ask an engineering officer at work about this, he's qualified to DR. level in aerodynamics, but as soon as I mention MK3, I don't think he'll be at all interested.
-
wont be interested?? you sure the reason why he wont comment is the fact that everyone knows the facts??
not any quicker?? well that all depends on what you have done under the bonnet dont it?? at the end of the day the mk4 was the turn and the demise of the golf shape!!! far too tall and boxy!

Won't comment? I never said he won't comment. I haven't even asked him.
True about under the bonnet. Not sure why someone said a 115bhp car isn't faster than a 150bhp that's remapped to 200+.
It's all academic really.

Its amazing how defensive the mk3 haterz get when we start fighting back
If you're going to take the piss out of a mk3, at least get your facts straight first.
Yes a mk2 might be quicker than a mk3, but at the end of the day who cares? Most of these cars are daily drivers that we have the occasional giggle in.

No one's backtracking, I don't see anyone taking back what they said. Losing an argument so you use a 'cop out' like that, isn't it fun
-
I see two sides to this -Mk3 owners bite too easily, I know this cos I always did (but screw everyone else, Ive owned mks 2, 3 and 4 and the mk3 is my favourite all rounder). Also, Ant is a protagonist and loves a reaction, dont rise to it.
Anyway, leccy windows............

im glad he only qouted the 8v figure because otherwise i wouldnt be able to post :)
16v gti 175bhp, less weight (and aerodynamic drag as the scale shows) than a mk4, i recon id keep up/maybe beat a 200bhp fatty :)
-
boys,boys,boys!
anyway on the upside i now have 2 fully working windows.. still no central locking, but hey ho! gonna imagine its a 3 dr :D
shelagh x
**also i dont think the fan is working, cant hear it anyway, no issues temp wise, but the scrappy has just had a gti in .. reckon i can replace it or will it be a smaller problem?
and also ive noticed there heavy wear to the OS tyre, just round the edge ( of the outside) steering is a bit heavy, but that i put down to having been used to driving a much newer car.. i would say its illegal to be honest, but want to know what the issue is before replacing it x
-

175? Really? Wow
What have you done to your engine? You probably would beat me, as it takes about 12 weeks for the turbo to catch up and to fix the boost leaks.
-
Probably been on Storm or Stelth's rolling roads!
Good news Shelagh!
Tyre is probably down to tracking/toe-in and that will also cause heavy steering, althogh that may also be the drive belt!
-
lol, threads on this site always end up in arguments, if there was a golfgti.com meet it would turn into a full scale riot!
anyway im shocked that not 1 person has said check the wiring behind the gaitors when you open the door, The wires always break and become dodgy! so worth a look :)
-
eeerr, i did that, 1st job :p
i might be blonde but im not stupid.. well ok, feel free to debate.. lol. i read the forum in and out xxxx
-
bollox to male ego tho.. if i want an answer i will get it :)
-
ok ok lol, sorry for my pointless post :)
-
haha job done, point made.. oh c'mon its all egos here.. lush cars, love ole len too lol,, love the advise, but stop assuming i 'can do it'
-
lol, well yeh its all help, sometimes you have to read through 8 pages to get it but yeh its all here somewhere!
-
It still all sounds like iffy alrm wiring to me, the cooling fan runs on for a little while after the car is switched off so i'm guessing the alarm would need to be connected to it in some way to avoid the voltage drop tripping the alarm.
-
theres a SIGMA alarm just behind the battery, ive checked but cant for the life of me see where its wired too, i dont have a fob for it anyway,
gonna see if i can rope my uncle into giving me a hand today :)
shelagh x
-
I would say, if it's possible to fully disconnect and islolate the alarm from the main loom this would be a good move, but old cars and diy wiring are a minefield as i'm sure you know.
As a last resort work around it might be easier to go down the manual window route and wire in a simple switch for the cooling fan, it would keep the car on the road and avoid chopping the loom up too much.
-
i still lol that this thread has 8 pages because the poster is a blonde woman! haha! Normally 2 pages max i'd say ;)
pics or it didn't happen anyone? ;)
-
Well, yes but some of us are old enough to know better
-
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh148/SHELAGH_2007/002-27-2.jpg)
anyway, actually meant blonde as in a bit thick
more issues with the car, son got out and the bloody skirt fell off one side :( cant see how it fixes back on as no clips!
also im filling the 'coolant 'bottle ( with water) every other day as the light keeps flashing, havent seen any trace of a leak, but if theres only water left in there dont suppose im going to either in this weather
roll on wednesday its going to the garage :undecided:
-
Have a look at the flange on the front of the engine, see if you can see any traces of water/coolant. Its the black plastic part with about three pipes/hoses coming off it. Mine has been leaking there, needs a new O ring type seal I think.
P.s. Thanx for pic. you are hot
-
ah cool ok, well ive just topped it up so i'll check before i go out tomorrow
and thanks, dunno about hot but always nice to get a compliment :)
-
Side skirts are held on with that nasty double sided tape stuff but can be refitted with no more nails or something like it, flat strip just push fits.
Coolant loss could also be the tank cap, is it black or blue, black ones are a weak point and need to be changed to the later blue one also check to see if you have any dampness on the carpets in the footwells as leaking heater matrix are also common on older mk3's.
P.s also just plain water will boil away quicker with no anti-freeze in as the AF also acts to lower the boiling point in the cooling system so this might be adding to the problem , i know it seems like money down the drain buying AF/summer coolant but it really needs to be there.
-
thanks Gav,
thats a relief, can get that done this afternoon.(its flippin sharp on the back of the legs!)
bottle top is blue ( must be my lucky day) carpets are not damp at all, tho if its a slow leak they could dry as quick as they get wet in this heat.
i'll add the coolant tomorrow, was going to get so much done over the weekend, but the tattoo shop was calling my name :(
what reg is the 'older MK3 then? surely mine is one of the newer ones (R)
shelagh
-
Yes sorry  i meant , as in all mk3's are getting on a bit now and suffer these problems.
Good news that cap is right colour and no damp carpets (they would smell in this weather), probably just have to keep an eye on the engine and underneath after car has been used and wait till you spot the leak although adding coolant can help to spot a leak as the coloured staining might show up easier, also worth having a good look at the rad as this can be a weak spot on any car in this weather and leaking water will evaporate pretty quickly on a hot radiator.
-
some bas***d has nicked the vent grille thing off the front of my car :(
-
no way ,thats sh*t,i'm sure someone will have one on here will have one floating about ,know thats not the point ,but should be bale to replace quickly, feckin tea leafs
-
This just gets better and better.
At least you have some working windows now!
-
lol.. i might have no bloody car left to hold the windows in place at this rate :(
-
Why on earth would anyone want a grille from a 15 year old golf, beggars belief.
-
i see quite a few running about locally, so i guess that option is cheaper than ebay or a scrappy ( which is where im going to be fluttering my eyelashes tomorrow )
-
Good luck , and keep us updated on how it goes.

How do you get 15?
R reg is 1998 and its now 2011
And I didnt think you could get the grille off without opening the bonnet?
-
I can't add up, and no idea about the grille....magic?
-
not thats grille, the little ones under the lights..even id have noticed someone swipe the big one
-
Cripes, they must have really wanted them, you've got some seriously committed tealeafs around your way
-
It's fairly easy to nick those, swift kick and pull em out. :lipsrsealed:
-
let me catch anyone messing with my baby and a 'swift kick' will be the least of there worries
shes going in the garage today for the cam belt, tracking( and 1 new tyre) and squeaky rough steering...( hoping that last job is going to be an easy one)
fingers crossed X
shelagh x
-
Good luck!
OH btw I do happen to have spares of those little grilles!
-
 just got in from the garage, asked him to give it a good look over.. todays billl is just over £200
3x part worn tyres
tracking
steering belt tightening
cam belt ( which includes the steering belt alteration apparently)
and the ABS light has been cut
also advised that i have an oil leak, needs new bushes, and i also heard the words, axle and welding to rear ( most of which are not urgent but need to be done for MOT)
thats made my day Len :) let me know how much and where to send it ( i dont use paypal so will have to be registered cash or postal order)
shelagh x
-
Well a steering belt will only take one tightening, so best its replaced as soon as you can.
Only costs £8 from Eurocarparts. Just make sure you get correct one as they are different if you have air-con.
ABS light cut?! Folks usually take out the bulb!
You will need to get that sorted before an MOT. Usually means there is a faulty sensor.
Will PM ya about grilles.
-
ah ok, well ill get him to replace it next week when it goes in for the rest of the jobs to be done.
yeah im mistified about the abs light too :(
ah well such is life :)
thanks xxx
-
Is this a normal garage or a main dealer?

no not a dealer, its the local'ish garage that ive used for just over a year, its on a main road in barry ( where i live) along with lots of other garages, all use the same supplier ( LDS and welsh auto parts) so i guess there competitive on labour, never had any issues with them on my other car :)

driving as good as new ( im sure)
£197.52p well spent :smug:

just out of curiosity;
is it possible to put larger wheels (ie17) to give it the dropped look rather than actually lowering it?
-
Larger wheels wont give it a dropped look because you have to keep the rolling radius of the tyre the same so have to use a lower profile tyre with the larger diameter wheels.
You still get the same gap between tyre and wheel arch I'm afraid.
Found one of those grilles, think its drivers side but cant find the other!
-
lol dont worry babe, its the other side i needed anyway ( same as fog light )
she came back good as new, has a chat with the boys, no jobs need doing till mot.... thatll be welding and play in something lol

Just slightly off topic but only slightly... Look what happens when you sort The New Members area by amount of posts. See a pattern, You see some regular posters in there too! Sometimes make an entertaining read and they often end up being locked!
