Simple q are the vauxhall astra coupe's 00-04 reg 1.8 or 2.2 reliable??
-
1.8 yes fine, make sure cam belt has been replaced.
2.2 is a waste of space, cam chain is a poor design and needs checking or replacing every 40k as they stretch and bend valves, £300 to replace chain and oil jet.
-
Really like the 1.8.. Will take one for a drive see how it feels

They are not bad later ones are 135bhp from memory.
-
Its really for a mate as he knows squat about cars he was asking me .. My first response ofcourse was vauxhall... Der sh1t lol but looking at them they look stunning esp with there red leathers. If all goes well for him may consider one 2 ;-)
-
friend had the 2.2 cabriolet coupe, was all good for about a year, but then things went wrong, quite badly.
alternator on his (limited edition, special edition) cost over 300 quid, and that was refurbed! steering rack went, then the pump, oil leaks, gearbox troubles, then finally went bang with no warning.
so he bought a vectra tdci, which has been off the road nearly all its 3 years of him owning it, vaux couldnt diagnose its fault which turned out to be egr valve, got that fixed and now it wont start at all, i think its the tank pump as theres no flow, but there coded pumps and not cheap.
id avoid vaux altogether
-
Wow he's had some bad luck suprised he got another vaux after his 1st one got fooked
-
my family has owned 4 vauxhalls for around 3 years and never had an issue with any of them. If you look after a car it doesnt break... more cheapskates own vauxhalls hence people moan about them breaking because they abuse them.
-
So one with full vauxhall history and unabused will be fine.. As with any model car
-
We have a 1.6 zafira as a family car that gets totally abused and it's never gone wrong, i'm not a fan of vauxhall but i'd have another the same in a heartbeat.
-
i use a 53 plate corsa 1.7 cdti for work, absolutely crap, new problem every week, wheel bearing, gearstick coming loose, indicator bulb blown twice in a week, brakes pull to one side..
-
Sounds like my mk4 loll. Wer gonna go see a 54 plate 1.8 coupe 56k full deal history £2500.. Will see how it goes for him. They do look the part must say. Its just the vauxhall repuatation is crap then from what I'm hearing. Vag ftw.(Even tho they have most same probs jus not as often) Lmao
-
why not the z20let mate there not much dearer and can be easily tuned
-
That the turbo ones?
-
yes thats a turbo, not much dearer but a lot more costly to run and insure, stick with the 1.8.
id personally never buy a vaux again, ive had a few and oddly the most reliable was a mk2 cavalier! but even that had its moments (ignition switch setting on fire and melting shround, and door lock fell into door)
i know people who drive nothing but vauxhalls, but then theyve never owned anything else to compare it to.
-
I woudnt touch a turbo unless its a vag .. So woudnt recomend it to my mate lol.. He wouldn't be able insure one anwways. iv had pure japs and germans never british or french so neva had chance to see what the downfall them is. But after your guys comments I'm gonna pass em on to him before we go see the coupe.

if a coupes been lowered then check to see the abs has been realigned, i got told this off me mate so not sure how true it is, but it was the car he had at the time.
also make sure the security card is there for the immobilizer code, vauxhall charge a fortune for a new one if its needed, which it may do as the early bosch units sometimes just forget there codes
-
Hahahaa forget there codes... That's definetly british manufacturing lol
