Title: GTI EDITION 35 (wheels)
Post by: Vman on 24 June 2011, 15:14
I like these wheels, I wonder if they will be available for UK models.

You can order them on new Golf GTIs now.
So they will be available to buy as individual wheels from a VW dealer.
They will cost big ££££

Good luck!

In the latest VW Driver mag it says the ED 35 might not even come to the UK?.

Yeah, they'll bring it in as the run out model to shift a few GTIs. Everyone wants Diesels at the moment due to high fuel costs so they'll use the ED35 to bolster sales as the mk6 runs down production. The new Focus ST will be about by then, plus the Astra VXR/OPC so the extra few ponies will be needed and the addition of xenons etc will make the GTI look a little bit better value for money.

I know it's a Ford but when the Focus ST comes out I think VW are going to have to have a good hard look at themselves, price, quality, 'optional extras that should be standard etc etc.

VW will have to throw in extras like they did with the run out mk5s. You could get some quite good deals on pre registered mk5s when they were on the run down, and VW chucked in their plastic leather for 'free' for good measure. With a European recession and general financial melt down getting worse they 'should' throw in a few incentives to move some metal, but the way they seem to prefer doing business at the moment is restricting production for the established markets (thus bolstering prices by way of smart marketing and taking advantage of public snobbery) whilst concentrating on the emerging far East markets.

I keep saying it, in fact so much I'm even boring myeslf to death, but you've just got to look at the value of the run out Leon FR+ models which come fully loaded with everything you would need and can be picked up through brokers for well under £20k brand new with less wait time than their extremely expensive German cousins. Plus the Leons come in nicer colours than the restricted and boring range we get for the Golf GTI/Ds.
I'm going to shut up now as I'm fed up saying the above and I'm positive everyone else is bored of me harping on about it!

I'm about 90% with you mate, but the Cupra R would get my vote over the FR.

I feel like having a debate

With a European recession and general financial melt down getting worse

I'd beg to differ with this viewpoint. Europe and the UK have been out of recession for well over a year now. It's only the PIGS which are in a proper mess and they are hardly representative of the whole continent.

Free extras will only be warranted if the sterling exchange rate situation changes - there's not much point pushing sales of something with no margin in it.

Nearly £20K for a Seat Leon - and not even the top model? Just a few years ago that brought you a brand new GTI, so evidently all cars have got more expensive, not just VW's...

Heart would say Cupra R, head would say FR+ Diesel.

Even with the over-exaggerated financial benefit of a diesel, I still wouldn't be able to justify one unless it was a company car doing 20,000+ a year.

Interesting points, and very valid ones. The recession is not over for the normal person in the street. It's getting worse. I have friends and family who work in retail and they tell me spending is down big time. Economy brands are very much in the sights of most buyers. In my workplace (huge and very established company) the work is dripping off like nobody's business, and it's still far and away the market leader.

As for your comments about a Diesel. Yep, I sort of agree with where you're coming from BUT you're an R driver. Someone who can happily spend £30 odd thousand on a shopping car. When I last visited the R forum someone had just put up a post saying they had driven about 150 miles to buy a pair of £500 shoes or something. So R drivers are hardly representative of your average person are they?  They are obviously recession proof people. 99% or the population aren't.

I am a much more sensible GTI driver. I travel virtually no distance to buy my £250 shoes as I use my Freedom Pass to save money and the environment.

I'm a closet Diesel driver. I buy ebay deal of the day trainers at £30 a pop and have them posted to me for free.

I see what Exonian is trying to say, up here i agree with what hes says. No ones buying anything. Houses are not selling, houses are going to auction and selling at half valued amounts. Companies are still shutting. Were i work is ticking over because of Asian and Arab countries orders, nothing order wise from the UK, even the service/calibration section is quiet so the companies we deal with in the UK must have next to no work. Aberdeen which was a very lucrative market for us is quiet this year. Only new GTIs ive seen and then spoke to the owners are managers company cars!
Even people who were running mk2, mk3 GTIs seem to be tightening there belt and selling them on private and getting normal cars. Which seems to have made the prices tumble and much cheaper than last year as there lots of competition for a sale out there.

tis true, I go shopping in the R - to Waitrose mind

Hmmm, sounds like someone needs to be banned for bringing the R forum into disrepute

Retail spending is low only if you compare it with the arguably over-inflated confidence bubble of the last decade when credit was easy and the message was spend, spend, spend.

So R drivers are hardly representative of your average person are they?  They are obviously recession proof people. 99% or the population aren't.

I'd say any new car buyer is not representative of 90% of the population. Looking at those on the R Forum I'd say a good number of us would have bought something more expensive had there been no recession, so we're not really recession proof either. Though as I said previously, there's no longer a recession, just inflation and a lack of credit.

spot on. with the rate of inflation at it current level there is no one out there that is not feeling the pinch.

That car is the toast of the town. Yawn .........
Have you read the write up in Autocar? It's not as refined as the GTI. Oh dear. Glad I have a GTI and not a noisy, unrefined ED35 with that old and heavier 2 litre turbo engine.

But the GTI isn't the 'top model'?
The FR+ might not be top model, but for £20k for something that includes Bi-Xenons, Sat Nav, Bluetooth, 18" alloys etc and is also available with the same engine as the GTI, I know where I'd be putting my money....

I am a snob and proud of it. The lowest I would stoop to is a 5 door VW Golf GTI. I'd be embarrassed to drive anything cheaper and less aesthetically pleasing. So, in summary my retort about the other vehicle(s), NOCD.

NOCD = not our class, darling!  :smug:
