Title: Steering rack query mk2 16v
Post by: laurenceyon on 23 June 2011, 19:47
Hi Gents

What are the tell tell signs that the steering rack is on it's way out?

I've noticed last year and this year that the steering rack gaiter (near side) is deteriorating after only 6 months.

Could this be down to bad quality gsf parts? I did have a nasty bump in the snow 2 years ago however I had everything straightened out and replaced the lower arms.

Also the tracking has never been 100%

Any thoughts appreciated.

Check and see how much play you have in the rack.

Thanks - I'll take into my local garage from them to check out as I don't have the foggiest what I'm doing...

Ha, I Goggled 'how to test a steering rack for play' and it's like reading a different language.

Thanks again
