Title: 99' GTI 1.8t (150)
Post by: stu646 on 22 June 2011, 10:20
Seriously thinking about buying one of these, but have heard bad things about them.

I don't have a huge budget , so my choice is quite limited to.

What do you guys in here think about this MK4?

Well, I went for it and just brought it. £1400.

I think it was a good deal! Going to get it this weekend.

Thanks guys.

Just sorting out insurance now. It says when I enter the car details in that it is only 125bhp though? When I thought it would be the 150 version at it said that on the ebay link.

But it comes up like this on the quote ;

Vehicle Description:   1999S Volkswagen Golf Gti (125BHP), 1781CC Petrol, 5DR, Manual

Came up as a turbo when I checked. Maybe its a problem with the insurance company's database?

I just checked on another insurance site and that also had it as a 125bhp too.

Is there much difference between the 125 and 150 engine? I thought the turbo only came in two size engines anyway , the 150 and 180

That is correct, the 125bhp is non turbo.

What should I do? As really want the turbo version and he advertised it as the turbo version. Although not one picture of the engine on ebay.

Although on HPI, the free check it says it is the turbo one, but does not mention the bhp

Ask for a photo of the engine

Asked him about 10 minutes ago :)

Although still waiting for him to reply to my question about picking the car up when I won the bid about 3 hours ago!

I think it must be the insurance sites, as I have found a 125bhp , 1.8 and when I put the reg of that car in, it came up with the same info as the car I won on ebay.

But when checked on HPI the non turbo car comes up as just a GTI , while my one, is showing as GTI Turbo , like  s-l-i-x had on his post

  I wouldn't worry, this happened with me when i bought my 1.8T! Insurance company believed it was a 125BHP, i got paranoid, thinking i'd just been shafted, but it was definitely 150BHP, albeit the ARZ :undecided:

Take it to R-Tech, they'll confirm what it's pumping out, and also give you a few extra horses!

Well the 20vT is the 1.8 20v with a turbo and the 20v is just a 1.8 20v without a turbo, which has 125hp. Definitely get pictures of the engine.

Spot on :afro: it might be a log book error with it saying turbo

This is the problem with ebay, naff listings and how people can buy a car without even driving it is beyond me lol

In a ideal world, I would go round looking at as many cars as I can, but for the past 2/3 months I have had no car at all and as me and my partner live 100s of miles from our family , we have had no way of going to see the cars I like.

For example, the one I have brought, is in Chester, £20 for a return ticket, we could not afford 20 odd pound each time to go view a car, as our budget was very tight as it was.

Is very strange. I spent ages last night trying around 20 different 1.8t listed cars, from on here and ebay and all of them came back as the correct 150 bhp, it was only the one I am buying that came back as the 125 bhp, although on HPI it says it is a turbo.

I have asked him for a picture of the engine, so am waiting to see one of those before I go to him with cash. But yes, def need a picture as need to insure it as a turbo , if indeed it is, as like you say, the premium is more.

Let us know how you get on. Really if the car is as described but you hate the drive you're a bit stuck if you've done a buy it now on ebay, legally binding contracts etc. But, you takes yer chances.

Hope it all works out for you anyway mate :)

How do I go about insuring it then? As every site says it is non turbo

Guess I will have to ring up and get them to do it manually?
Title: Re: 99' GTI 1.8t (150)
Post by: golf-sib on 24 June 2011, 14:34
Input data manually off car and model over the the registration process. When you finally find the company you want and they ask for reg details, give them the info and explanation. They may request a copy off log book etc but at least this way you will know the real insurance value opposed to the 125 model.

All done now. Thanks for your help guys. Looking forward to getting it tomorrow now.

Really happy with it. Under 99000 miles, interior perfect, no dents/rust on the bodywork. Good price I think at £1400.

What is the deal with the wood panel effect though around the stereo! Hate it. Anyone on here changed there's? If so where did you get the new stuff from?

Just spray it. I did mine silver like anni style and looks good. Doesn't take long and makes it look 10x better

Picked the car up today. Drives good and is in very good condition.

The only niggle I have is after being on the motorway for about 40 minutes and going on to normal roads, I noticed a whining kind of sound when pulling up at roundabouts and generally when coming to a stop.

Any ideas?

Wheel bearing perhaps?

Other people might suggest this also, so you'll get suggestions after my post has been deleted.

Think it was just the wheel pressure. As just been out again, the tyres were all at 18, so since then, not heard any noise at all.

All in all though, is a very nice car, pulls very well. Took it to about 105mph on the M56 on the way home, as did not want to push to hard yet.

What kind of top end speed can you get from it?

As for the wood effect, I actually like it. Looks a lot nicer in the flesh :)

Does the 99 model not have the digital red display on the dashboard?

I have seen quite a few on ebay that had them but mine has all the trip details on the rev display dial.

I only seem to have power/warning lights on the middle display

was optional on the early cars. Count yourself lucky, I don't even have the indication of MPG in the rev counter!

Ah right. Thanks.

Glad I have the MPG at least. See how much petrol I am wasting! Got to 28mpg , so not to bad.

One last question, I need some new alloy wheel logos, but when I search on ebay they seem to have different sizes, 60mm, 50mm ect.

What sizes would I need if anyone knows?

Really enjoying it. Does me just fine.

Was able to cruise nice and easy at around 90 all the way home on the motorway, which made a nice change from my MK3 Gti which to be honest struggled to cruise at anything around 90.

Is very quite though the car, which my girlfriend likes.

Going to give it a nice wash and wax tomorrow, seeing as the weather is nice and then look at getting a couple of scratches out as well. None are deep, so hopefully some t-cut will do the job.

just measure the width of the logo you already have.

Bloody whining sound came back today.

It only seems to happen when I have driven the car for a longer journey (over 30 mins ) or when driving at speed on the motorway.

The whining sound happens when slowing down to around 10/20mph, weather I press on the breaks or not. Start of quite, then over time, it will get louder.

Never happens on short journeys though

Be ready to have the common faults come and bite you on the ass;

-Window regulators will need replacing at some point to updated metal versions, unless receipts with car indicate already done.
-Make sure all your bushes are in good order, especially the rear axles.  If they're worn, you'll notice a loud banging when going over any bumps in the road.
-Check your hoses are all good, with no leaks.
-Have a look around your engine bay to check for any oil leaks.

As you can probably pick up, I've replaced all these items, and lots of others, on my MK4 Golf GTi AGU in the last 5 years of ownership.  But, as its the missus car I won't scrimp on any parts needing replacing.  Thats why it still drives like new and I actually prefer driving this car around town than my Scooby.
