"GTI". Bare with me, for the last two nights I've had the some total of 7 hours sleep. Got up at 4AM, picked my mate up, went to the station, locked the key in my 1.6 (only got one key so locked it in the boot so mum and dad could pick it up) and travelled down to Devon.

8v, impressed with the engine, torquey little engine (don't worry, I still know full well the 16v is better.). LOVE it on the motorway, was doing 50, came to the national speed limit and in the time it would have taken for the 1.6 to get to 65 in fith, this got to 90! Not what I'd consider a fast car but it just pulls on the motorway and that's exactly what I wanted!
Absolute bargain, really appreciate the price. £100 (payed another £100 for the tax).
Had brand new Toyo Proxies last MOT, new brake discs, new brake pads all round. Ran beautifully for the 300 miles last night, 43MPG was on the MFA on the journey home at 80.
Few things wrong with it:
-Drivers door barrel not locking or unlocking with the key. (Got spare handles, easy fix)
-Passenger window sometimes just won't go up or down. (Pulled over, opened the door and thumped the door card and it worked but got spare full door looms, regulators and motors)
-No radio (I took one to Devon for the journey back and ran it over accidentally. :embarassed: )
-ABS light not coming on at all and doesn't kick in so the back slides if you brake stupidly hard
-Handbrake light comes on sometimes and won't go out until ignition light off and on. (ABS fault, hoping a sensor or something).
-Exhaust rattles sometimes (needs a hanger, not an issue)
-Passenger wing mirror needs tightening up (it's loose)
-Drivers wing dented (get a new one and get it sprayed up at work)
-Couple of rust patches (not too serious so will sort it)
-Some sort of tensioner on the engine is noisy so will need sorting, gonna change the cambelt anyway, think it's that tensioner.
-Needs a drivers seat
Seems a big list but all "cosmetic" issues.
Well pleased with it, THIS IS NOT the end of the 1.6. Even though this one drives miles better, is quieter, quicker, smoother and better on fuel, I still prefer the 1.6.
Will be sorting insurance (drove it home under trade) and swapping the coilovers and sound system over then generally tidy the car up, will probably keep the Golf front on this one and completely do the 1.6 up.
Want both MK3's to be as mint as possible.

looks great
and what a BARGAIN
the 8v is not as bad as folk think, iv had all of them and believe me, hteiors not much difference in the 8v and 16v, infact id say my old 8v lump that was in the black car was faster than the green 16v car i had..
my new engine makes VR6's look like a 8v now tho as me and ben found out today
-
Ran over your own radio? What the hell!?
-
Such a bargain mate! I spend many hours on the internet looking for a car like this  Well done!
Oh, and if you wanna double your money on it

Cheers matey. Black so lots of inspiration from yours! Is metallic though.
Will clean up better then it is, a fair amount of rust near the tailgate on one side, luckily not serious at all!
Yeah it pulls well, needs a DAMNED good service and the bay needs a tidy up so will get that sorted.
I bet it does, I probably will do a 1.8T MK3 when I can.
Ran over your own radio? What the hell!?
Basically, I parked the 1.6 up, took my bag out (had tools and a few bits in it) and some prick started moaning (who the hell is awake and dressed at 5AM) moaning that I couldn't park outside his house, even though he had a massive drive and was parked next to a wall. Moved the car to keep the peace to the other side of the road where it was just a big fence, no houses and didn't realise he said to my mate I couldn't park it there either, cause I'd have moved it back to his house as tight as possible and left it, then got the hump and moved the car up the road, running my bag over. :embarassed: Thought I just hit a spanner set so no big deal. Total prick though, next time I'll use the Micra and dump it there.

Don't see many silvers about.

Looks good and a complete bargain for the money :afro:
Handbrake light will be nothing to do with the ABS, check the fluid level.
-
looking good dude what a purchase

Yeah cheers mate, few spots of rust but nothing the spray booth won't sort. :)
Thought I'd read it will do it with the ABS on the late cars? The fluid is fine, perhaps the sensor is gone although it doesn't flicker, it will come on and stay on and if I hammer on the brakes, it will come on still.
Swapped the drivers and passenger door handle, will probably just delock the passenger tbh.
Tightened the passenger mirror.
Tried programming alarm, pain in the arse because the model number has faded off the siren. Will be ripping that out sometime, possibly replace with one with remote start.
I started the car and heard squealing, this is a pulley squealing. Fairly sure it's waterpump or belt tensioner. History shows belt last changed in 2004, so will be ordering a belt kit, water pump, aux belt and tensioner and probably an aerial base but if I ever respray the roof, I will be getting rid of the aerial.
Decided I'm gonna get those bits and do them before insuring it and then swap the suspension over.
looking good dude what a purchase
Cheers mate, couldn't believe it tbf, literally got out the car, looked round it and said "I'm happy to buy it now" after 20 seconds. Bloke was proper genuine.
-
Looks good mate even with the worst pics ever. £100 what a bargain i paid 200 for mine and it was a lot worse than yours :afro:

Yeah wasn't bad at all. Cheers mate.
Right, debate time.
Do I go for looks on this one, or keep it fairly standard, anniversary lights at the front, maybe the stripe, backbox and Hella twins or joey the lights (although I'm sure after going down lanes in this the other day that Joeying dims them down a fair bit) and lower it?
Then I can put the smoothed bumper back on the 1.6, do a lot of paintwork on that one, sort the exhaust and bumpers, really get it looking fresh then my brother can use it or I'll 16v it still.
Or do I go for looks on this one and put the smooth bumper on it? :undecided:
-
Bargain hunter of the week award goes to you fine sir.
-
ABS - take the warning light cover on the right of the dash off and see if the bulb is connected/broken/missing......
-
No point tarting up the 1.6 just to give it away.
Also not much point going 16V in the gti.
Why not keep the 8V as the slow one, then do something different entirely with the 1.6?
What about a Mk4 1.6 16V with a few tasty mods, 108bhp as standard... Cheaper on insurance, nice looking engine in the bay and it's a bit different to the 20VT/VR6 conversions you always see.
Not a lot of extra power in the conversion, but it'd still be worth it with a few tweaks and a map IMHO.

It's blown mate. I reckon that's due to the fact it's been stuck on for ages, ABS deffo not working. Will find a spare bulb in my room or swap it with a white LED.

I'm going to try and find out if I can insure both under the same policy for not too much, I can only drive one at a time!
You know what I was thinking actually? A 1.4TDI engine from something. Something under the 1549cc tax band and it'll be economic then!
This won't be happening for a while though!
-
I was going to suggest that but no one usually listens because I'm a diesel nerd.
-
Watch this space.
Waiting on sisters boyfriend, fitting a sub & amp to his Celica then going to attempt (rain and me not falling asleep dependant) on swapping the stock suspension from the GTI to the 1.6. Wanted to strip and paint the coilovers at work tomorrow but then it means another day I won't be insured in it so might just stop being a weirdo and swap them tonight.
-
Gaaaaaahhhhhhhh what do I do?
Wanted the GTI by the weekend but still have love for the 1.6 so happy to keep driving it for now.
Do I take the callipers and carriers off, take the coilovers take them all into work and 2 pack prime them tomorrow then go orange on the callipers?
Or just stick the suspension on, leave the rusty callipers and just drive the poxy thing.
-

You won't see them behind long beaches anyway.

All insurance dependant. I dunno. I'm gonna pop to the shops and get a few bits and start sorting some on it tonight.

Yeah dunno what colours to do. Want to paint the coilover bodies in black because they corrode up to easy. Orange on the coils maybe.
All depends on the insurance really, I would just take the coilovers off and leave them off 'til I paint them but won't know which car will be insured tomorrow. :undecided:

Lol love you too. Doesn't take long to do em so will PM you when I'm down.

Jeez, it won't be long before you're sucking his cock at this rate.

Looks great for £100! I'd say carry stuff over to the GTI and use that as a daily runner then with the 1.6 strip it bare and over the years do something with it that will surprise all of us (16vT/Audi S2 engine/Mk5 GTI engine?), could be a real nice project.
-
Right, so Admiral are a big bunch of wayne kerrs.
First they nearly double my policy cause I'm paying monthly and the whole extra £300 over the year for the GTI I got quoted online was a big load of sh!te.
They want over £300 a month which I can't afford.
What a load of crap.
Unsure whether to do it up and flog it or break it up or what really.

Sorn it and do it up, in the mean time don't put any unnecessary money into the 1.6 and drive with a very light right foot. Use the time up until your next renewal to save as much as you can and see if you can afford to insure the gti outright next year. You'll also be older, have a years more experience and an extra years ncb
-
TBH just suddenly lost all motivation in the stupid thing.
Probably do it up and sell it. Live with the 1.6 and do it right up.
Although my dad just pointed out they might want the GTI.
-
did you not think of looking at insurance in the first place!
-
I did, phoned them after an online quote "will it be OK just to phone and get the cars swapped there and then?" "Yes that's fine sir! will just charge the car the deposit" "Cool cool".
Then I drove it under trade instead home and today.
Yet, an engine conversion into the blue shell is cheap.
-

For some reason engine conversions can work out cheaper, most times it is the lack of a GTI badge tbh.

hmm! but didn't ask if there was an increase due to the engine, as obviously it would not be same as 1.6 but with an extra deposit!

No, they had the reg number.
I dunno. Might just break the car and possibly hold back the engine and braking gear.
-
Oh, picked up a Powerflow exhaust for the 1.6 today. Start of tidying it up again. Right bastard, had to take it off myself and drop the shocks and rear beams off the car becauase the bolts were seized.
-
Shame you cant insure the GTI but then you've not been on the road long so it's expected..... See if you rents will take it off your hands, do it up while they use it and then have it back when the insurance is cheaper?
-
Sister might have the GTi but tbh I want the engine.
This car is what I've got to sort. Matte spray can which I tried to get loads of runs in was fairly sucessful . Tyre was a joke.
Car has a stalker from a cop who "has seen this car around what happened to the front vumper it looked nice"
After pulling me at some speed on a completely empty motorway at 6:30 am. :lipsrsealed:
-
What was the outcome of the conversation with Mr. Policeman?
-
Those tyres are the sex.
-

Yeah was fine. Was nice.
@thai :grin:
8V engine on the subframe is on a pallet on my drive. Easy to get out TBH. ront crossmember in red oxide primer. Plan to degrease and clean the engine then strip all the bits off it, clean up and put back on with new gaskets.
-
Great find/buy Josho. :afro: Shame about the insurance though. Have you not considered leaving them and trying a different company though?
BTW, bargain are awesome!

Cheers. Yeah, all way too expensive, however an engine swap is cheap.
Yeah cheers mate, hopefully the bits will work out anyway.
-
It is purely because of the GTi badge. I found that when I had the GL. I could drop a 8v GTi engine in to that and insure for less than the 1.8 already in there!
-
I know, makes no sense.

Heavy.
Especially with flat wheels on the trolley.
To get it to that stage I used about 5 spanners, an angle grinder, jack, hammer, pliers and a pallet and some wood.
Such an easy engine. I just dragged the pallet out from the car with the van. Couldn't get hold of a crane.
Will be looking at buying an engine stand though!
-
Came home to find my dad kicked the engine out of the garage into the other garage. How the hell does a 50 year old bloke lift an engine up and out of a garage on his own?
Anyway, cleared a little space and thought "Not so bad" so set up a scaffold tower and a winch temporary just to try it. I have to admit, sometimes I just love myself:
So gonna clear out the garage properly and get stuck in. Need to order loads of boxes for bits.
Gonna paint the engine up black and silver.
-
Are you keeping the GTI then or swapping the engine into your 1.6?
-
Not sure yet mate. Gonna give the 1.6 car a good going over.
MOT is out Friday.
Exhaust is pretty much hanging off cause a massive 10mm difference in size and a half arsed reducer. Nothing to stop it coming apart from the cat if you tugged it hard enough.
Orange sidelights.
A horrendous knocking I cannot locate. I reckon the brake pad spring has done one.
Looking like a heap.
Headlights not working.
Gonna fail epic.
-
Ordered an exhaust reducer so will hopefully have that Wednesday or Thursday.
Then painted the front crossmember
(http://s162.photobucket.com/albums/t265/JoshoRey/IMAG1093.jpg)
Anyone know how to get the bushes out of these things? :undecided:
Also started spraying interior bits black.
-
Looks good,
Bushes, lots of swearing, dodgy face pulling and pain. Or you could have probably burnt them out before you painted it. :lipsrsealed:

Ah. Someone mentioned £2.50 each from VW. They look ok but if they're cheap. I think I've worked out a way hopefully, drill the center ever so slightly to remove the welds.....

Yeah that might work... To be honest though if they look in good order, no splits etc, you're probably better off just leaving them , remember you have to get the new ones back in!

Cheers guys.
Bottom end knocking and throttle cable snapped on the A2 at Gillingham. Got to Dartford on purely idle clutch, pushing and hills. Finally found a guy at a petrol station lent us an electrical screwdriver, took the airbox off, ripped out a bit of air horn wire and tied the throttle open.
45nph in fifth. Will get a pic tmoz.
-
Must be the Medway curse, you're lucky to have even left Gillingham alive tbh.

True. I swear the whole of Medway is like born imbred.
Went ice skating but on the way back was with a couple of close mates that aren't, but look like total pikeys. Fit in Gillingham perfect.
Better then a mate when she broke down in the Medway tunnel, just pushed bumper to bumper out.
The fix of destiny:

GTI wishbones removed. Blowtorch on the rear bush and a chisle to remove rubber, hacksaw the aluminiumbush ring and tap out.
Blowtorch then hacksaw around the front bush, cut off the overlap then G-clamp:

Stinks tho.

Was the Queens car once init.
Car is annoying me. Exhaust shield is rattling, couldn't keep up with a 1l Saxo yesterday, OK I had for up and him two but it's so down on power.
Got the other wishbone off which was stupidly tight, painted them both silver, gotta rub down and do a better coat.
Gotta remove the PAS rack and paint that silver and the subframe black.
Black subframe, silver wishbones and PAS pump, black hubs, silver coilovers, orange springs, dunno about the callipers yet.
Screw lowered cars.

Not sure I like Hammered Hammerite. Looking better nonetheless. May grab some Hammerite spray cans and go over it all.

I wouldn't bother with cans over the top, the finish won't change much now its it's been brushed. why bother anyway, not like its going to be on full on close up display when fitted.

Was gonna go orange but just want it looking as standard as possible really. Fed up with the popo looking all over my car cause it has red callipers and a pink rocker cover.
WTF?
Won some polybushes cheap on eBay.
Good old eBay sniping. Front and rear wishbone bushes and ARB bushes.
-
Yeah, red is the only colour for me for a black car, well this one anyway.. did contemplate red brakes but can't be ar*ed with it. Going to do them silver!
When I had some spare dough and the car needed essentials, I did enjoy ebay sniping or bargain finding.

Red will look sweet with the other red touches.
Brakes always look smart in silver. Just done the calliper. My brother reckons orange but I dunno.

In the short term you'll like the orange but long term, i'm not so sure., especially since you thought red was an issue.
Not many red touches on mine at the moment but there will be loads to come over the winter.

Nah nothing, just constantly getting pulled for like 10 mins a time for doing nothing.
Will have a look. B)

Some serious issues with the rear of my car.
Car is litterally moving all over the place on the motorway and go round a corner and the rear just feels soggy and the wheels will eventually follow the car.
So will be needing some axle bushes and top mounts.

Got one wishbone all bushed up, gotta do the other. Having massive difficulty in fitting the ARB bushes though.
Decided to put the electric windows in, goto drivers side finished and the electric mirror on.
Only taken an entire day and a bit.
Looms not even in properly yet. So much alarm wiring I'm cutting out, flipping awful how it's all been done on both cars, none of it done nicely.
I will be putting an alarm in but it will be all tidyed away and easilly removed from the loom if wanted. Why people screw this all up I don't know.
Also, it's taken a bit of time as I've been wanting to do it properly but didn't want to remove the dashboard so took out the clocks etc. to do it and run the loom properly. Most of it's fine, will clip the last bit in when I do remove the dash.
Fixed loads of little bits along the way though things that go un noticed so I'm happy. Been rained off though.
Also some wayne kerr pikeys thought they had the right to the drivers door on the GTI as I went into lunch, told them to do one and chased em off with a crowbar so no doubt the car will be torched sometime.

looking good josho!
where you get the bushes from and how much they cost you?
also what make are they?

Powerflex, £15 for all of them. eBay.
Locked myself out the car. :lipsrsealed:
Bootkey in the car, passenger side parked right up against a wall and I had put some tape on the very bottom of the door pin to stop it rattling. Thought brilliant, you can't see it and it's gonna work. Unfortunately although it locked it stopped the pin coming up and the key turning fully so not even the full closure worked.
In the end just dragged the car out from the wall with the van.

New, in packaging obviously bought but never used.
Erm depends on the firmness. These aren't solid solid but much more firm then rubber. Didn't want solid solid ones as the vibrations woulda been extreme.

Also, stopped as it started raining, 10 mins rain and had a HUGE puddle in the drivers footwell.

-_-
Replaced with the one off the GTI, sealed perfect.
Going to be swapping all the carpets over sometime.
-
Forgot to update, got electric windows, sorted all the central locking so all is working like new.
Got the GTI hubs, discs, wishbones, outer CV and callipers and pads all ready to go on the car tomorrow.
So will have 288MM front 5 stud brakes and 4 stud drums out back.
Gonna order up some axle bushes then try get the rear beam swapped next week.
Taking it to work to fit it all.
Also have CL Golf lights and a GTI grill on. Looks slightly off with the Vento bonnet but I quite like it.
Gotta just pay off a couple of finances then gonna buy lots of paint and couple of panels. :)
-
So had to just change the wishbones over in the end.
Apparently this is bad or something:
That's exactly how it came out. Will only use genuine parts if they aren't being upgraded from now on.
Polybushes, can't comment on the drive that much as the tracking needs doing badly. Also have GTI wheels with 205/45's on. Will be dropping down to 195 or maybe 185 I think though when the tyres wear out.
The front handling has improved drasticly though. No more understeer everywhere. Due to the tracking it does feel odd side to side as it turns in stupidly sharp left but not right.
Holds on like hell round roundabouts and just drags the back round if it slides. Gotta sort the rear axle bushes and put the GTI rear brakes on.
GTI brakes aren't that much of an improvement tbf. I have done literally 4 miles. They do bite and they are in all fairness miles better then the tiny brakes on it before but they still just aren't very sharp.
Seriously going to be looking into a Caddy servo and master cylinder as they look the same and they have a proper feel to the brakes.
Also I broke the sump.

Ruined my paint job.
So drilled it out:
Tapped it:
Bolt with an oil seal:
Jobs a goodun. Haven't replaced the sump due to changing the engine soon so not that fussed.

Other then ripping an exhaust captive nut out, car is awesome.
Currently spraying the spare Golf bonnet matte black, deleted the washers.
Will be spraying all the panels I have matte black and probably wrap the roof. Rear quarters not sure what I'm going to do yet.
Whole car will be matte black while I spend time here and there stripping any decent panels I can find for a respray.
Although looks like I won't be insured in it or get a new car soon due to insurance, fuel and tax bills.

Wossat then?

I do hope you flushed that sump out after retapping the drain plug thread? Swarf and big end bearings aren't really friends...

Looks like a detailing shot! He's been busy with the polish

Yeah, with some cheap oil.
