What was the damage?
Title: Re: CAT C motor - would you run one ?
Post by: i_am_me on 18 June 2011, 16:40
why has it been written off?
depends on price,if the cars cheap enough then it is worth it,if the repairs dont cost much but it is a bit of hassle.
also the back end is ugly.

Matey had a cat C mk1 focus. Drove perfectly and had no uneven panels/panel gaps.

Not quite that bad, here are the categories and what they mean !

Quote
The insurance write off categories are as follows:

Category A Insurance Write Off – the vehicle must scrapped and no parts or components can be sold other than for scrap. Amounts vary but Category A Insurance Write Off vehicles can be very valuable. Consider some of the online companies that will buy you car ‘what ever the condition.’ If the insurance company are prepared to give you a settlement figure and the car wreckage then make sure you shop around the various websites for the best offers.

If all else fails try your local scrap metal dealer, they will often pay good money for scrap cars or unrepairable vehicles. Visit our Scrap Cars page for more details. Also visit our car crashs website.

Category B Insurance Write Off - the vehicle must not be used again but non- structural and roadworthy parts and components may be recovered for use in other vehicles. Care must be taken to ensure that they are not critical components with important safety functions. Again there are several online companies who will offer significant amounts of money for Category B Insurance Write Off vehicles.

Category C Insurance Write Off – the vehicle is repairable but the parts and labour would exceed the value of the car. This is a tricky situation as there are plenty of amateur and professional mechanics who could use second hand parts to repair these vehicles at much lower prices than the list costs for parts and labour. Discuss this with your insurance company if you want to keep the car rather than have it written off.

Category D Insurance Write Off – the vehicle is economically repairable but other factors are involved that cause the insurer to declare the vehicle a write off. Perhaps the replacement car hire is too costly or it will take too long for a specialist part to be delivered. Again, discuss this with your insurance company if you want to keep the car.

Category X Insurance Write Off – the vehicle is easily repairable and may even be still roadworthy.

Unrecorded Insurance Write Off – the vehicle damage was not reported to the insurer or the driver was uninsured. The most common example is drivers who only have third party insurance but have had an accident that was their fault (usually not involving anyone else).

My old man had an x-type 2.0D. Spent more time in the dealer than at home BUT he did love the way it drove. He now has an Alfa GT JTD BLackline and that is more reliable, faster and better built. Go Figure.

You looked at Alfa 156 JTD Sportswagens Chuff? A lot of car for the money and the leather seats are lush.

Sorry to burst the bubble.

They are mega both to look at and drive etc vs a VAG oil burner but.....

They'll break and both you and your new employer will be upset

They won't do 60 mpg

They won't be easy to fix

They will be a right c11nt to get spare parts for

The spare parts that you will be able to get will be costly

Stick with the 1.9 TDI VAG mate - you know it makes sense

Have you tried looking for a car which is cat C and requires repairing?

Preferably front end as with most VW's its bolt on bolt off.

We've got a 51 plate Zafira as a family car that was a repaired cat 'C' , i bought it with an engineers report stating that the damage was not structural and mostly cosmetic on one side of the car.
2 years on and it just flew through it's mot and is one the best car's i've ever owned.

Im not a fan of written off cars how ever cheap they look and some off them arent that cheap plus if you dont see what the damage was to the car you just dont know how well it was repaired.I was behind a Focus ST yesterday it was a 55 plate with a load of young chavs in it the car wouldnt drive in a straight line crabbing like mad down the road like a old mini must have been a damaged car repaired bad...

As long as you know it's a Cat C and you pay the right price I don't see a problem. My dad has a Cat C 307cc and it's fine.

My Golf MK4 1.6 SR was in a crash recently (wifey driving, no-one hurt) A Zafira hit her on a round about, and damaged the drivers door (small dent) drivers wing (scrape and dent) front bumper (smashed) drivers wing mirror (case cracked).

The Golf was/is an R reg with 100k on the clock with full dealer history.Insurance valued it at £1,200 and wrote it off. I bought the car back for £156.00. So I kept the car, and got a cheque for £944.00

Now, we were fully comp, and as the car is still driveable, the insurance have told us that until we get the work done, it will be insured 3rd party only.

"nd hand parts have come in at £150.00 and respraying & fitting has come in at £375.00.

Once the work has been carried out (next week) I take the car for an MOT at a designated MOT centre where they assess the repairs and re mot it.

Jobs a good un.
