Title: New toy.......100% Quad free
Post by: plasticfantastic on 16 June 2011, 22:15
Hi all,

I found this sitting in a shed a week ago, and today i finally picked it up and brought it home!

(http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/8390/img9838.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/815/img9838.jpg/)

Its a 1976 Image ff2b formula ford thats been modified and use for hillclimbs, from what i can find out i dont think its been used since 2007.
Its running a 1600 kent crossflow on twin 40s, but i do find myself wondering what she would be like with a turbo'd ABF and an audi gearbox?! Should be an easy way to get 240-250 bhp?! = 600bhp/ton

Always happy to hear comments good or bad

Cheers

Id avoid turbos on a car like that, comin on boost unexpectedly would be a terror! Be an awesome drive tho. Personally id run it as it as, a restoration project with track time!

Very nice mate! That's a pretty F40 shell next to it too!

I'd second what houston said and avoid turbo. I'd keep it as a high revving NA engine

Cheers for the comments guys.

Havent really made my mind up what to do yet, need to give it a good clean first and see what needs doing. But trackdays are definately on the horizon!

Another idea was a ZZR1400 hooked up to a sierra diff, should be 190bhp stock and very rev happy?!

(The F40 is a very long term project, 9 years now!)

I was just about to comment saying that a motorcycle engine would be pretty sweet, it'd be perfect I think...Lots of revs, good power from stock and lots if tuned and sequential gearbox

Whatever you do, don't butcher it!! put it back to original 76 FF spec, and enter it into Historic events, do you have any of the original body moulding's, or the moulds for that matter... changing the spec would be absolute sacrilege, don't do it!
Find the original driver/owner, and put some history, and provenance behind it, even re do it in its original livery... that could be an extremely valuable car one day

What Thom said.

I'd love to see a VW powered one of these though, maybe that can be a separate project!

Thankfully I'm only taking this pi$$. The disappointment is that there are people out there that take the pi$$ for doing things like that to perfectly nice vehicles

haha,

I wont butcher the car, im trying to find out as much as i can before i decide anything.

So far it seems that Image only produced cars for a few years between 1975-79 i think.

Im still trying to find out what it should look like, but i think the bodywork is original ff spec except the rear wing, this must be an addition for hillclimbs along with the twin 40's and the wheels as i believe it should have steel wheels for ff.

Another couple of pictures for you all...

the one thing i remember about formula fords is there were no spoilers or wings permitted so the rear wing and the front spoiler have been fitted afterwards.

if your thinking going for a bike engine i would advise the busa 1300 there better than the zzr1400, my mates got one in his mini and it goes!!

The plan for the F40 is to now sit the body over a Lotus Esprit chassis, then make the floor pan to fit. Then i have to take molds from the complete car. Should make it a simple build as it will only be 12 bolts to attatch the body to the chassis just as the Esprit is!

Sounds awesome, i would love to have an Esprit at some point in my life.
Would be good to see a progress thread on this

Busa's chain drive?? Will be hard to mate it up to a car diff, whereas the zzr1400 is a shafty so will mate up easy.

Possibly.

Hi all,

She runs!!! Just fired her up in the workshop after checking fluids etc... Fuel is a bit stale but that didnt stop her. Defo need to find out a little more as it has also been dry sumped. Going to get intouch with Scholar and see if they have any info from the engine number (it has a scholar rocker cover).

I have seen bike engine mated to a sierra diff and its not too difficult to set up.

Im glad the F40 thread is getting some attention! Pictures of your mates would be really appreciated!

Road legal could be possible if i can get the doc's saying the chassis was produced in 1976, then it doesnt need an IVA as its over 10 years old, and if you can still register as day time only?! then i wont need lights etc?!

Cheers

Was just out in the workshop, and wanted to see if the battery had held charge since i charged it yesterday and luckily it has!

But what i didn't notice yesterday was the revcounter, its a really old style where it doesn't move smoothly, the needle updates about every second. Not sure what this is called but would love to know if anyone can help?!

Cheers
