Title: Contract phones
Post by: Dave_IOW on 16 June 2011, 18:54
Ok, so looks like im getting a contract for the first time, appeal of the new phone mostly and not having to top up all the time.

Limit is roughly £30 pound a month tops and must be on O2.

Been looking at the HTC Desire S,

thats £27 a month, 300 mins (will never use all them), unlimited texts and 500MB internetz

Is this a good choice, does anyone have one they would like to share their views on, or would anyone suggest an alternative, if so, please explain why

The iPhone 3gs 8mb is only just outside the £30 barrier at £32 a month but not sure if that would be any better than the HTC.

ihone4 all the way, but youd need to pay upfront for the phone  :undecided:

i wouldnt have an i phone full stop, but certainly not a 3g's. obviously a few years back it was sh!t hot, now its just sh!t. the 4 is a waste of money. HTC value for money is qualitly my brother and sister have HTC phones both spot on between £20-30 a month.

why does it have to be o2? if youve been with them for a long time then ring them up and see if they have any loyalty offers on.

do you not know anyone who works for a phone place that can get you a friends and family contract? i get 300 mins, unlimited txts and internet for 14 quid a month on orange

then why not just see how much to just buy the phone your after? pointless getting a contract if its gonna work out cheaper on pay as you go, only benefit would be the internet, which you WILL need if you get an android phone.

if you can afford it get an iphone (3gs, much cheaper, just missing the video of the iphone 4, but maybe you can get an app for that now) but im more than happy with my x10i, a lot better than most android phones ive used, and the 2.3.3 update comes out soon, and because the arc is out now the x10 has come right down in price.

HTC are lovely phones, and if you didn't intend on spending more than £30 a month in the first place, don't be tempted to spend more simply because the iPhone 4 is on offer. for starters, the 5 is out in a couple of months... and you need to pay for it up front.

Android is imo a better operating system all round anyways.

OP, use price comparison websites. You can get some cracking deals on them, compare different handsets, get free gifts etc

I have a 4 pay £29 a month 1000 mIns 1gb browsing but do live in Newbury home of Voda so get a good deal :)

I think the signal on their home turf is crap  My sister used to live in Cromwell Road and it was BAD probs why you get a discount

Then why is my boss who swore by his ip4 when he first got it now looing at HTC Windows Phone 7 devices ?  :lipsrsealed: Rose tinted glasses fell off after I showed him up a few times with my 'ancient' HTC methinks

then why arent htc updating there desire, saying it cant handle 2.3+ when other phones with the same spec are managing it fine? id be worried there newer phones would suffer the same fate soon

iphones are the best, no doubt about it, but there pricing and marketing appeals to gadget snobs and earns them a reputation, androids good but its still a free os, not designed to run on a specific unit and it suffers for it

What a load of sh!t, my 'OLD' HTC Legend that runs a 600Mhz CPU (400Mhz slower than the desire) can run 2.3.3 just fine, in fact it's faster than 2.1 or 2.2

megalolz? are you a 12 year old or summit? i dont own a desire, i own an x10, so summit thats only been announced on wednesday wouldnt instantly be news to me. anyway, reading that link youve posted there cutting a lot out of the ui, so is that an admission thats its bloated?
also its not the speed of the processor they were on about, its the memory, if they put 2.3 on it then it would only have been able to run about 2 or 3 apps before it was full, and not all apps support running from sd

ps, im an android user, my x10 is still stuck on 2.1 till there update cos i hate running cf, imo sony and htc pale in comparison to samsung, even though i hate there ui

Title: Re: Contract phones

HTC build quality is one of the best, their UI is great. Sony's UI is pants and their phones aren't the best design, my sister in laws x10 mini is so thick, they should have called it the SAF (short and fat). Samsung have a decent UI, quite like stock Android/ADW Launcher, I've heard lots of people moaning about their build too.

They're having to cut back on the Desire because the Desire has a 512Mb capacity rom. If it gets the new Sense, it'll be worth any cut backs imo. Root the X10 and get rid of the fugly UI by installing a different rom.

the x10 mini is a joke and cant be compared to an x10, its like comparing the wildfire to the sense, half the phone, the x10i is a very well built and good looking phone, there ui in this one isnt as bad as old ones but the mediascape and timescape crap does piss me off, besides this i really do think that if theyd updated it when it was released instead of keeping it on 1.6 then it would have sold a lot better and scored higher in people estimation.

ive already rooted the x10, i would have a different rom on but the camera sucks on all them, vga at best and lose video completely, once the newest update is out i will defintely be upgrading

i used a workmates galaxy for a short while and got wound up quite quickly, i seem to get this on all samsung phones, he managed to snap his phone in half when he sat on it so build quality definately an issue, but there way ahead when it comes to development of android, theve released a free sg2 to developers to see what they can do with it, quite cool i reckon

Right so think ive decided on a HTC, never had one before and they look pretty cool tbh.

Im a little confused to which is the best/newest model, if you could have one, which would it be?

Desire
Desire HD
Desire S
Desire Z
HD7

All are within reach i think, which one will be the most updatable and stay newish for longest

Pretty much, but the HD has more internal storage space and better camera. Probably a few more differences too.
