Title: Rates
Post by: Winso on 15 June 2011, 23:06
I did a photoshoot with a mates car a few weeks ago, went well and the combination of a decent car and sweet location has resulted in a pretty tidy set of photos.

I've been in contact with the editor of well known VW mag whos interested in featuring the car/photos. A conversation around the topic of ££ will come up before too long and I need to get some idea of what sort of figure to pitch in at. Anyone got any experience of dealing with mags for freelance type editorial photography work? I've got a rough idea of figures but input from anyone with experience would be handy.

Cheers!

I wouldn't be happy working for less than £50 an hour, you're going to be looking at a price per photo at which point you could work out how long you were shooting and divide that by the number of finished images and go from there.

NB take into account post production time too

I haven't had any experience with mags but I assume he will want to push you for as many as possible for as cheep as possible. They will know that you will be 'star struck' by been asked to feature in a mag and play on that. Once you decide your fee, stick with it. Would it be possible to get a copy of the mag and email some of the other big photographers in there and ask them?

No.

Talk to Nick, I think he's had stuff in magazines before and may well be able to advise on remuneration for such stuff.

They used mine without permission so I just invoiced them at £25 a shot (I think, was a while ago) and they coughed up.

It's a hard thing to call, don't want to sell yourself too cheap but at the same time don't want them to walk because they think you're taking the pee. I'd go in with £50 a shot tbh.
