Title: Rear parking sensors
Post by: Damion on 13 June 2011, 22:52
Got a price of €454/£380 to have the VW rear parking sensors retro fitted by the dealer, is it worth it? or shall I go for another brand around 50% less?

As long as they are the flush fitting ones and not those protruding horrors. Prices vary, but £450 should be top wack including labour and VAT. Can't you get a rear view camera instead if you can find one and your head unit supports it.

Post by: Damion on 13 June 2011, 23:07
its just the basic head unit, 310 ..... :-(

If you are not changing the head unit then get the sensors as they'll work with all units and also give you a visual on the RCD310.

Thanks, it says audiable sound and works when in reverse gear, the 310 is a very narrow display..

I wouldn't bother with a camera, the parking sensors that ship as OEM are really good and I've never found myself in a situation where I've thought 'if only I had better visibility out the back'. It's a gizmo and if that's your thing, it's a bit of fun but to replace the 310 just for that seems a bit much IMHO.

Watch the fitting though, a colleague had them retro fitted to his GT and the dealer didn't do the best job of setting them flush and every time he washed the car, he'd snag them. Eventually had them sorted out but just check carefully before you drive away.

I can't live without them in London. Everyone is so impatient and if you want to save yourself having some impatient a-hole shoving past and nearly hitting you, you've got to perfect the 5 second parallel park.

Lol, ask anyone who has a camera if they thinks it's just a gizmo, it's extremely useful and if you have rear R LED's it really helps with rear visibility.

They could double the cost of that option and I'd still get it.

The retro fit ones from the dealer are quite bulky compared to the factory fit flush ones. You can see them in the accessory catalogue available to download from the vw.co.uk site.

Personally I wouldn't... when they actually defeat the purpose of keeping the bumper looking pristine (The sensors, factory or retro-fit are fugly IMO).

Don't get me wrong, it's a great accessory but parking sensors are far more useful IMHO.

From what I heard through the group, the reversing light on the LED tails wasn't as bright?

What is the resolving power of the rear camera in dim lighting conditions? I imagine it's not going to be great at resolving shadow detail unless I'm misinformed about the brightness of the reverse light?

You mean like this  Laserline, the best outside OEM. Contact Laserline and they'll put you in touch with a local fitter. I would guess up to £300 fitted?

I fitted these myself, bought a brand new set off ebay for only £25  They come in at around £125 normally.
Quite a skilled job (I worked in F1 & Aircraft) would recommend you get a fitter. I'm really pleased with result & reckon they look near as damn it original, but they do not display on RNS510 screen, just audible bleeper.

Better than I thought actually, thanks for posting 'em up. Still not sure if I'd be persuaded though - engine remap and alloys would hold more appeal over the options that I ticked already.

I actually find the combination of the passenger mirror automatically dropping on reverse and the sensors are perfect. I had a loan car the other day while my GTI was having its wheels aligned and it was one of the new Polos. I nearly couldn't park the damn thing I was so used to the convenience of the mirror drop and sensors! I imagine it's the same with the camera, a feature you never knew you needed until you had it.

These do also but painted. They fit from behind as OEM protude about 1mm.

Just bought some DOTZ alloys (told they were once yours?) Will they not fit MK6 without spacers. Guy gave link that states ET45?

Yes but its a different bumper with the countersink holes. Lots of expense to change to factory fit ones, including new bumper, painting of bumper, paint blending, VW sensors & control units etc etc.
The Dealer fit options ones shown in the accessory catalogue are massive and stick out loads.

(1) They ARE NOT nicer than the Monza Shadows IMO as theDotz look like 'any other wheel'.
(2) My Insurance Company at that time was going to charge me extra for non OEM VW wheels.
(3) I had a storage problem.
(4) Was quite unwell at that time and could not be bothered dealing and arguing with the then Insurance Company.

I looked before and the accessories version sits proud on the bumper (I guess to hide the drill hole and paint removed in the process)
