Title: Oil Pressure Alarm.
Post by: P6UL K on 13 June 2011, 21:29
Today the oil pressure alarm has been going off along with the flashing oil pressure light and the top end its very tappety, tappety, tap, tap.... Got to my mates garage and checked the oil pressure - Was spot on, as i knew it would be as its a new VW switch.

Let the car sit for a bit and checked the level, was also spot on as i've long ago done an oil/filter change.

After it had sat for a while it was fine and the top end noise had also gone, but on my was home tonight up the motorway it started again....

Any ideas?  :undecided:

Oil pressure dropping, sounds like your oil pump is worn or the pick up is blocked.

+1, when the oil gets hot a worn oil pump can struggle to make pressure.
does not help if the pick up screen is covered in crud either.
Dont run it if it is not getting oil to the head, will be looking for a new engine pretty quickly

Bugger!

Is fitting a new oil pump difficult?

Missed that bit  :embarassed:

Very easy to replace the oil pump, drop the sump and it is held with 2 bolts.

No problems, I would also recommend doing it first thing in the morning and stone cold as it will be a lot less messy.
