Right, car went into local vw dealer for an MOT today, failed on cv gaiters, apparently they were split. They replaced one which was fine but they have now turned round and said they can't replace the other one as it is seized solid to the driveshaft. Now they have quoted me for a new driveshaft, £280.00. Needless to say I think they are taking me for a ride and am heading down first thing in the morning to have a look. I have never heard of this being the case in the past, what are other people views/ideas on this? I am now on the hunt for a specialist in my area, Norwich/Norfolk who will carry out the repair but I am a bit concerned that my car may now be completely undriveable or should it be a case that they can just reassemble what they have tried to fix so that I can take it to a specialist?. Bloody nightmare, never had a problem with them in the past but this is the last time they will see my car.

seems like they are taking you for a ride mate. I have never known one to get seized. If it has you can get a driveshaft off ebay for £50-70
-
They arent trying hard enough, they split the driveshaft to get the cv boot off.
it's very tight, wouldnt be seized, because it's emersed in grease it's entire live!!

Thanks for the replies, exactly my thoughts, I told them to stop working on the car and I'm going in to see what they are playing at tomorrow. If they aree going to mess me about they can just put it back how it was and I will take it somewhere else. Absolute stealers. Have now found a couple of specialists that I will be ringing for quotes tomorrow.

a gaiter cant sieze on a shaft its rubber cut it off cut the clips off, most garages today use a stretchy boot with a tool to slide it over the cv joint. ask your local garage to do this i got quoted £35 to do my partners honda jazz. this way it can be done without taking the joint off which i am assuming they cant get off
-
Cv joints can seize on so they may be correct in what they are saying.

Thanks for this, I just saw a video of a tool that does similar, they didn't even put it in a vice to try and get it off at the dealers, I just told them to reassemble the bits & i will take it to a specialist to repair it how you have described. I have had my fill of dealers now trying to pull my pants down & pineapple me.

the cv boot that we use are duro boots that you use the cone then slide the cv boot over it---think the dealers are taking the piss

Mine failed 2 years ago with a split CV gaiter. Just thought I'd share :D Got sorted with no dramas.
-
I think its separating the cv joint off the driveshaft, is the dealers issue.
can be tight as did mine a few months back, but with the correct tools, should be straight foward.
I managed it with a Workmate

Phil1980 do you fancy naming and shaming the dealer if it turns out they were pulling a fast one?
I live in the Norfolk and im keen to avoid any rip off garages

Just an update on this for everyone, I took my car to a vw specialist who had a look at the cv gaiter, he could not find a split in it anywhere. He repacked it with grease and put new bandings on to keep it in place. Charged me £50.00 which I was more than happy with considering the dealer wanted me to fork out for a new driveshaft , he said that if it had needed a new gaiter he could still have done the repair using the special tool to stretch the gaiter over the joint. Will be taking my car to him in future, also I will be writing to the dealer asking them what the f**k they think they are playing at. Avoid the main VW dealer in the Norwich area like the plague.

Avoid all main dealers unless your still under warranty imo. They are just rip off merchants.
Just needed an oil and filter change for my last service, main dealer quoted £300. Needless to say I told them to stick it. Took my car to my friendly local garage and they charged me £150. Nuff said!

Jesus, thats pricey aswell!!
Longlife oil is about £50 ish + filter £15 odd. Is that 2 hours labour for just an oil change?

Are you sure that isn't a full service PLUS oil & filter change for £300? sounds very expensive.
