Title: LED Number plate fittings
Post by: Damion on 12 June 2011, 21:01
Can I buy the new LED fittings and put them on to a GTD without errors?
Read through some older posts but never found the answer?

Thanks

What did you pay for them Doc ?

They were around £24 each, there bound to be more expensive by now

well, they are OK on the MK5, you can see a green circuit board, so perhaps they have a built-in resistor, on the back they are marked 12v 1watt.

Ive got the VW Led lights on the number plate and they generate the error light on the dash, they only draw 1 watt were the normal bulbs draw 10 watt.

Just ordered a set.
Part no IK8943021C

Dealer said he would reset if an error code comes up.

already been done, it just keeps reappearing, you need a gold resistor thing across the loom to fool the canbus.

If you read my link to another forum posted earlier in this thread, then the links from that i posted to a German forum. It seems under discussion in Germany that with the mk6 some seem to work error free by turning off the cold diagnostics option for the rear numberplate lights in VCDS but some it does not seem to work error free for that long... The cars that are coming out the factory with them fitted have a new software version 615 or higher so i wonder if theres an extra setting for them the old software does not have?
The crude way is to just fit resistors.

I'm probably jinxing myself now but I bought the LED lights from Alltronix and I was having LED errors on and off but since I messed around with the coding in VCDS I have not had any errors.

Now don't ask me what I did - I can't check as I borrowed Sam's VCDS cable to do the work - all I know is that I reset my lights back to 000 after our attempt to remove the error created more errors in the main rear light units.

Ouch! It's definitely something I want to do too, but I'm trying to get my hands on an RNS 510 and some decent cleaning products, so my budget is whacked for now

Post some pics / info when you get them though, I'd be interested in whether you get the dash light warnings and if the dealer can clear them.

I've got a '11 gti and installed the leds + disabled cold lamp check...still have the error though...

Why the hell do you want the number plate illuminating brighter so the cops can read it easily?

A guy over here retro fitted the OEM ones to his GTD last week and initially they worked fine, but strangely after a day or two he got the bulb-out warning. He's looking now to see if there's a fix for it via VAGCOM.

I looked into this, in fact I had the lights but have sent them back, VWUK had loads of stock when I last looked (part number is now 1K8 943 021C)

Unless you have the latest BCM with HW VER 103 and SW VER 650 or above you will need to add resistors even with the cold diagnostics turned off in VCDS.
If you look at this thread (http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/led-kennzeichenbeleuchtung-im-style-nachruestbar-t3034756.html?page=24) the final outcome was by adding 82 Ohm 25 Watt resistors it cured the bulb out warning.

There is also a mention of setting BIT 7 in BYTE 17 of the BCM, which is undocumented in VCDS, has worked for some of the latest BCMs.

I've got nothing to hide but the standard number plate illumination is adequate.

But in this day and age of LED's and clear white bulbs, yellow bulbs look very out of place

I installed the OEM numberplate Led's a couple of weeks ago hoping that the un-ticking of the "numberplate cold lamp check" would bypass the "bulb-out" thats common with led lights

After this didnt work, I searched the net and found a thread on the TEX (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5235159-Installed-*OEM*-LED-license-plate-lights-today/page2) about a guy that did a similar install in the states

What I liked about this OP's install is that he found a way around the resistors that used to get too hot and required mounting inside the cars bodywork etc

His theory was that by using a larger resistor, you reduce the % of total capacity drawn and in return reduce the surface temp of the resistor

For my application I made use of 56Ω/50W resistors which are rated at 300C surface temperature

The OEM bulbs used on our cars draw roughly 5W (4.7W to be precise) vs the OEM Led's that only draw 1W, which results in the dreaded "bulb out" warning

This indicates that an additional draw from the resistors of 4W each will be required

This is only roughly 10% of the resistor's full draw which will result in a surface temp of around 10% of the maximum 300C

What this indicates is that the max temp of the resistors will be around 30C + ambient (35C max), thus 65C which is not enough to come close to melting our bumpers and makes it safe for storage in the bumper void

Down to business

I went ahead and ordered the following parts:

Two (2) of each of the following:

- 1J0 973 702 (female plug)
- 1J0 973 802 (male plug)
- 000 979 131 (repair wire)
- 000 979 132 (repair wire)
- 50W/56Ω power resistor

The resistors used with some heatshrink to further reduce chances of melting

Assembling of the wires are easy, the only thing to take note of is that with the female plug you need to remove a purple clip before inserting the wires and then refit after insertion to keep the wires in place

With the male plug, after inserting the wires you need to push the purple tab down with a small screwdriver to clip the wires in place

Assembled they look something like this

Now you have to join the wires together, I recommend spreading the individual copper strands and intertwining them, word of caution, ensure that you join the wire coming from plug point 1 (one) on the one plug to wire 1 (one) from the other plug, these numbers are clearly indicated on the plugs themselves

Now just some soldering and heatshrink and bobs your uncle

Test fitting

They tuck into the bumper cavity very nicely, drove around for 30mins and pulled them out and was able to touch them easily, little warm but nothing drastic

So if you want the OEM Leds and dread the "bulb out" warning, these are an easy plug and play sollution

Ps I have the sat nav and was wondering why sometimes I get the VW logo when i switch ignition on and sometimes ni

I installed a pair of LED plate lights on my GTD yesterday, along with a pair of resistors. I bought the lot off Kufatec.de. No bulb-out errors (so far!).

They were a little cheaper for the light fittings than the main stealers, but their delivery charges are a tad high, so overall it wasn't that cheap. I'm pleased with the look though.

LED number plate lights are part of the 2012 model year spec and I think VW start building these around week 22. If you got your GTD at the beginning of July, it was probably built just before the changeover to 2012 MY spec.

I remember you posting your car was built a week early. My GTD was built on week 23 and as you say the LED plate lights finish it off nicely.

There's a thread that was posted by evo1986 earlier this year which gave details of the spec changes for Model Year 2012. Do a search on '2012 changes' (thread title is 2012 changes..................BW22 model year 2012 MY12). Gives details of engine and spec changes for MY2012 so should help you determine if your car is a 2011 or 2012 model.
