Title: Running at 70°C heat temp, average 25mpg on the motorway!
Post by: Shady Pioneer on 12 June 2011, 20:52
On the way back from Volksfest I noticed my temp gauge was down sitting at 70, it had reach 90 previously in the day when I left the engine running during pack up down in the pissing rain at Volksfest.

Flicked through to my MPG and saw after 45 minutes of driving on the motorway doing 65mph that I'd only averaged 25mpg! This is most definitely not right as I've done better driving through town. Usually on long journeys it's around 35+ depending on how fast I'm going.

What could the cause be?

Tell tale signs are taking alot longer than normal to warm up , never reaching normal operating temp whilst being driven, will use more fuel, they cost about £6 so very cheap to replace

My guess would also be the thermostat. I'd change it as a first step, it's cheap & easy enough to do

Do I have to drain the coolant system? I did it last weekend.

most if not all will come out once you take the thermostat housing apart might be worth getting a new housing aswell as they like to break sometimes expect a little leak once fitted again fidly little job just make sure you get the o ring sealed properly once you re assemble

Okay no worries. I'm ordering a thermostat and an o-ring from AVS. Will see if I can give it a go.  :lipsrsealed:

If you drain the coolant into a clean container you will be fine to reuse it.

This and honestly mate phone VW and ask about a housing as well. Check but they usually come with a stat.

To check if it's the stat start the engine from stone cold. Constantly feel the top and bottom rad hoses. If they warm up together then the stat is open. If the top one gets very hot first then at about 90C the bottom one starts warming up then the stat is ok. However the temp dropping to 70 when on the move but rising to 90 when stationary is classic stat symptoms. You're quite clumsy so I'd order a new stat housing. With age and the heat cycle they go very brittle and very easily crack or break off into bits. All of the coolant will drain too, as the stat is at the lowest point in the cooling system.

its supposed to

I would second what Khare said and replace the thermostat housing. I've had one blow apart from the pressure before, not pleasant experience

This had me thinking, Herm mentioned he had similar to me as it was quite windy too. I'm goin to test it from cold and see how that goes before doing anything further.

No matter the weather the temp should always be 90. The stat will open/close to always keep temp at 90. I ran 90 last summer in the boiling Spanish heat and 90 this winter gone in the freezing UK
