Title: Cut and shine question
Post by: gibby on 05 April 2005, 13:06
This is a question for all you shiney bodywork people. I've been using some cut and shine called funnily enough, cut and shine and it's made by a company called Nielson (or Neilson, can't remember), it's pink and does a cracking job as you just put it on and rub it off and it cuts and shines as it says on the tin.

Now the bad bit, I'm running out of this stuff as my dad got it years ago in a 5ltr tin and I don't think it's in production anymore, so I wanted to know what people thought the best stuff was these days, does anyone know of a similar product that cuts and shines ? I can't be doing with having to cut it with one product then have to do the whole car with a polish as it takes me long enough to do it once.

I find that after a while, especially after the winter that my bodywork needs a cut as it just pics up loads of marks on it so I'm not just after a good polish as I need a cut too. Anyone any recomendations ? Or do people use t-cut then a good polish ?  :undecided:

If you really need to cut it that often, then the "shine" part of your gunk must be pants. No good for the paint taking all those layers off !
Try a clay bar to get the stubborn marks off the paint, never used one myself but heard great things about them.
I think the method is wash, dry, claybar + cleanse (you use a spray to keep the clay moving on the paint so it doesnt stick) then wax, then wax again if you're a perfectionist!
Or pay a bodyshop to mop it proffessionally, but have a colour wax handy as it'll need a couple of coats to keep the shine in.

i use the carplan colour fast t-cut,auto glym super resin polish and autp glym extra gloss protection.it does do a nice job but it is time consuming but you only get out what you put in.i have heard good things about "mer".never used it myself but might try it this year.

OK this is what Gary does, but he says you need to know what your doing.

Buy a mop if you don't have one and do the hole car with M3 compound, water and the mop very messy job. Be very gental on teh endges or your go through to far.

Then you want to polish it with a decent polish, once it has been moped it should be ok for a long time as long as you keep the polishing up. Auto Glym is fine.

(if you don't want to do it yourself get a body shop to do it but it will cost, also make sure they will be responsible and sort out any edges they may mess up)

My reply is nearly word for word the same as Clares!

I use the 3M cutting compound with a mop, followed by one or two coats of a high resin polish (I use Autoglym).

The mop isn't essential (cutting compound can be applied by hand) it's just considerably easier and less tiring if you do use it.

As Clare said, go easy if you do use a mop - it needs to be kept as flat as possibly to the bodywork, and do not allow too much heat to build up in the pad - ignore these two golden rules and you will ruin your car in less time than it took to read this sentence.

I have also heard good things about the clay bar (a lot of the ferrari dudes use it) as it picks off microscopic bits of crap off of your paintwork, that washing misses, meaning it is 100% clean and debris free before you begin the polishing operation.

Alternatively, check out ebay - there are a number of guys operating on there that do a full days valet using real high end products (including clay bar) for about £200. They are there the whole day and will travel to wherever you are. Your car will never look as good as it would with one of these guys.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=72201&item=7966040766&rd=1

I may have the Zymol one done (they come up on ebay from time to time) in the summer.

Thanks for the replies. £200     That needs to be from the factory shiney for that ! It's nice to get someone else to do it but there's a certain amount of satisfaction to be gained from doing it yourself.

I use autoglym on mine. if ive got some scratches then i polish them out using G3 cutting compound. Dont use G3 like an everyday product or you will end up with a bare metal finish

^heard toothpaste is a good one to get scratches out but dont hold me to that

thats exactly what i use!!! comes up amazing!!

most of the people i know that have sort of 'show' cars use swizzol. its good stuff, aint cheap but the finish lasts for ages. there is a group buy link in the discount section that i could probably get going again if enough people are interested?? i know the guy who started it so shouldn't be too hard to sort something out?

I'd be interested if you got that going again joe.  What's that other one that people rave about, maguires I think, anyone know anything about that ?  :undecided:

I've used the claybar and was amazed how much grime and muck it could pull out even after a good wash. It struck me as a very good alternative to removing paint. If your paint finish is good, as yours is, and its just ground in dirt, tar spots etc., that you need to remove I really would recommend that you give it a go.

Don't leave your claybar in the sun or in a hot place! It turns into a sticky horrible 'chewing gum' like mess.........I really must get a new claybar :embarassed:

Cheers Rich.  Who sells these clay bars ? Can I get them from most auto factors ?  :undecided:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=7894.0

if enough people are interested i'll get something sorted. i think he need at least 10 people to get the prices not in brackets. (brackets are retail)
this was posted a while ago but like i said i know the guy and he's only down the road from me so it won't be hard to get something going.

and gibby, he sells clay bars!!!

I got mine from a stand at VW Action a couple of years ago, however, I'm sure they must be available from most motor factors.

Dubby uses Zymol. She kindly gave me some last year. Thats for the waxing side of it. The paint needs to be perfectly clean before applying Zymol. They do claybars and I think you can buy them online.

Once again, thanks all for the info.

I wont be going to Inters as I can't be @rsed travelling to Ipswich and I've not heard anything from anyone to suggest that it's even worth the time and effort to go down, even the mags are saying they'll give them one more year or it's curtains for the whole event .
Title: Re: Cut and shine question
Post by: G6dub on 08 April 2005, 15:31
I must admit with inters, we enjoy the drive there and the 2 nights out more than the show itself. Even if we do loose people at the dartford tune, and have girls spinning cars lol (sorry Sarah said it again) it all makes part of the fun

Don't know much about it myself to be honest.  :embarassed:

Just thought I'd recommend something that I used this weekend though, it's a new polish from Autoglym and it's supposed to stop smears and the haze etc, anyway I did mine yesterday and the finish is quality, the paint work feels like glass, it was easy to apply and take off as most Autoglym stuff are. It's called Ultra Deep Shine its a dark square on the bottle and it can be purchased from halfrauds for £11.99. It's mainly for dark colours but I poslished my wheels with it and they come up well.  Get some you will not be disappointed.

I know someone that uses Z on there Cupra ours had stone chips all over the front in just a few months his is 4 years old and doesn't have 1, he uses the stuff that is meant to relect stones thus no chips and on his cupra it really has worked, so that stuff is worth the money, but you can go over the top with all teh stuff that is out there these days!
Title: Re: Cut and shine question
Post by: gibby on 11 April 2005, 17:30
Tell me about the stone chips, really p1ssed me off this weekend when I was polishing.

What's this Z stuff then, sounds good ?

...and yeah, you can go on forever with all the stuff that's out there today, shampoo, pre-shampoo, pre shine, shine, protection shine etc etc it goes on and on.

A good quality wash, Zymol or Autoglym, then
T-cut,
Auto glym super resin polish and
auto glym extra gloss protection.

Works a treat, did this on the missus's old Cavalier a while back when we were selling it, and a guy bought it just from looking at it (he didn't even drive it! )   Full Asking Price !!
