Is it not something to do with the size of the spring caps changing?

could possibly be, not 100% on Golf's atm, but most suspension kit's I've seen tend to be for years 92-98. But Dom could be on to something mate, give the seller a bell and see what's occuring.

The shocks / struts will be the same. Only the top caps and springs vary throughout the range depending on the year and / or the engine size fitted due to the different spring rates required.

Yes, Bilstein are regarded as one of the best OEM and aftermarket suspension manufacturers in the world.

the front shockers up to 94 used different diameter springs... you can fit them but you'll need new springs to match (top mounts are the same though)

(I think it's 80mm pigtail early cars and 65mm later?)

That's right mate, TDI's and Cabrios had the old type 80mm plates on the later models though for some reason.

t.b.h with vw they could have any combo fitted!!

my late 94 car had early shocks but later 288mm brakes and the early 95 car had late shocks but 280mm brakes!
