This is my current project. I am going for OEM as much as possible.

So a little history and its current state! I swapped this mk2, for a bumper for a slipt screen van! It was not great but i saw the potential. No pics of when i first got it unfortunatly.
It needed and got the following all in one go!
Engine - bottom end knocking due to lack of oil. Got one for free  It got a full head rebuild before fitting
Clutch - seamed silly not too
Cambelt
Brakes - All round inculding rear calipers
Suspension - Shocks, springs and top mounts
4 Lamp grill
Exhaust back box
I used it for 18 months as my daily, then decided it was time for a repaint! Got a doner car same year colour and spec for £100. Result. I ended up with good panels where my mine werent.
So at the moment its in my workshop waiting to be finished stripping and some welding before it goes to the bodyshop. I will post pics of its current state soon.
Cheers Mike

I'm liking this motor pal.
Have you lowered it a touch?
-
Nice to see a standard mk2 :afro:
-
This looks pretty cool, the silver steelies work really well with the stock body work and small bumpers.

Yeah lowered a bit, not sure how much was a new set of springs from a mate who didnt know what they were, and lucky for me it worked out perfect.
Nice to see a standard mk2 :afro:
Nice one cheers mate.

Looks sweet mate.. You not gone for big bumpers like most then ??
-
I stuck small bumpers and de-Gtied my my last late mk2, it looked wicked when it was lowered.
-
Refreshing...... looks lovely..
For the look you're going for it doesn't look like it needs anything on the outside now :afro:

Not a big bumper fan, they look good on the right car. Love the retro small bumpers.

So time for much needed update!! These next pictures show my MK2 in its current state!!

The strip down for the repaint is well underway as you can see. My initial plan was a quick strip and repaint, it has now been going on for 18 months! Work and lots of can you justs have got in the way. Been trying to get back on it recently.
So the areas of rust i found were actullay alot better than i thought, especially considering its now the grand old age of 25!
Rear left hand wheel arch behind the pastic trim,

-
The doors i got with my doner car are fitted and rust free, and the tail gate is mint
The fuel filler is really good on my car too which is a result
(http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss153/minimike/Golf%20MK2/Golfs023.jpg)
Rear brake pipes not so good though, def in need of replacing!

Also on the long and ever growing to do list is to remove the electric windows. The car i am pretty sure, would never have had them as standard, even though the front regulators look OEM. Plan is to remove them and go back to 'keep fit' windows. Plus it will get rid of the horrible mess under the dash and running all over the car!
So the plan is to fix all the bit that are broken clean and paint up engine, suspension etc, the get the car painted, and the the nice bit of putting it all back together.
-
Electric windows would have been an option

Electric windows would have been an option
The wiring is def not OEM though! I have the options sticker in the boot but cant find anywhere to decode it! The decoders i have found dont recognise the codes.
-
Right so time for a long needed update! Spent a while stripping more of the car and preping the panels for paint. Got a mate moved into my workshop who is a body guy so is pointing me in the right direction!

All was going to plan for a resto and then a mates mrs did this to his MK4.
She hit a motorbike, the rider was ok but car and bike were not! He only had 3rd party insurance so i brought it off him mega cheap  So engine conversion time begins.
-
So i am currently going through the MK4 wiring.
Its a AGU 20v turbo. Sorted so far are
Sent ECU off to have immobiliser removed, got that back all good
MK2 1.6 driver throttle cable
MK2 1.3 Speedo cable
G60 Brakes
16V Master cylinder
Going to use the Mk4 gearbox, i know there are simpler ways of doing the conversion but its just had a new clutch and i have the doner car to cut out the mount and weld into the MK2 shell
-
G60 Brakes ready for a refurb!!

Think you need to change the title to read "How to acquire a mk2 GTI and rebuild it into a 1.8T and full resto for a seriously small amount build thread!". Or something to that effect. :lipsrsealed:
Good work so far, hopefully you speed up a little though or I will have forgotten about it by the time the next post comes around.
-
Thought you were keeping it original ?

Def going to speed up. Doing house at same time, and the mrs complaining!!

I really couldnt decide for a long time what to do. It will look original on the outside!! :embarassed: I have done a original resto before but never a engine conversion so thought it would be a challenge!!
-
I read this and though, nicea resto prohect. Then saw the 20v and decided u sir are a legend. Oroper sleeper look
-
So thought it was about time for a long over due update. With work, diy and a workshop move progress has been slow. But some progress has been made. Engine is in!! Only for mock tho.
As i had a whole doner car i decided that i would use pretty much all the engine bay stuff so that it looks as "factory" as possible. Mk4 washer bottle, PAS and header tank fitted,
(http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss153/minimike/CIMG2346.jpg)
Also i am goging to be running the standard air box, not wanting a loud car!
Manage to source a complete Mk2 PAS rack and pipe work, car didnt have it but as i now have a pump thought i mite as well fit it. Plus it was only £20!
So next part of the plan is to decide on whether or not to use a Mk4 battery tray and cover, think it will look neater not sure if it will work tho. Gear linkage to fit but that looks fairly straight forward. Also need to source or make using Mk4 clutch pedal a hydrulic clucth system. Plenty to do not enough time!!!
-
Nice to see a standard mk2 :afro:
well it wasnt really standard, G60 steels for a start :lipsrsealed:
then the rest of the thread, is as they say, history
