Hi All,
After a crap day I decided to open the Golf up on the way home as I've not took it to it's limit. So put my foot down and got to 105MPH and it started judder like as if I forgot to change up gear. It is completely standard apart from drilled airbox and I was woundering if this seems about right for a top end 2.0 8v? as I have read its suppose to get to 123MPH?
its also just had a Major service with cam/ten and waterpump etc :(
Cheers in advance
-
no thats not right.
Is it feeling right through the rest of the rev range?
-
I didn't think it was :( yea feels fine to me though the rev's
I can take it up to about 5000 RPM before it starts to not like it?
-
what can you get in fourth? should get 110 if you push it.
-
Nooooooooooooooo I wish normaly about 80-90 MPH !
-
I would say the timing is out
-
How many miles has it done?
Could be many things.
-

Struggling to pass 5000RPM is a sign that something in the timing isn't set right.
-
does it rev past 5000rpm or kind of hit a rev limiter?
try revving it while stationary
-
ah ok,
My mate done the service and belt etc and said that it was about half a tooth out so he corrected it but his away at the minute
Its done 154314 and it's on a 1996 P.
any other idea if it's not the timing out?
Will see if I can get the timing checked asap
-
I've not noticed but I heading off to work in a bit so will have a look and see what its doing and when.
-
Timing is out
Braver man than me ragging it when it's in safe mode :D
-
Agreed! If the limiter cuts in at 5K then the timing is out. The recent cam belt change is also a good give away!
-
I had the limiter kick in at 5k on mine when I had the cambelt done took it back guy adjusted it and it was fine..
-
Get the timing checked it is in safe mode.
-
set fire to it. get a good car
-
Right then, drove it to work and topped out at 5000 RPM in every gear...and going by what everyones saying about the timing think I will go with that. Will get it checked asap.
Will let you know how I get on. Cheers guys been great help :)

You did 105mph in an 8v?
Surprised it went anywhere near as fast as that!

defo as above with the timming out,
lol got more then that in my 8v just a todge over 120mph on a private track, think my cars restricted. my foot was buried and it just would not go anymore
-
i did a 100 ONCE and blew the isv pipe off :D
-
A real Gti does 135mph!
-
why 135mph? it says 160mph on the clock, :lipsrsealed:
not a real GTI then?
-
Add some power and get rid of the rev limiter and it will do 160mph alright
-
i managed 130 and let off as got scared hah still had about 1500 rpm to go too :D
-
Man up Gash!
-
Right then People just a small update:
My mate is back and he had a look and checked the timming and everything is timmed up right he said to take it to the VW boys round the corner and see what they said. They checked that again the timming come back fine but found out that the replacment coil pack I fitted last week looks wrong and they think it has a limiter in it, they also stuck it on vagcom and that come back with nothing apart from the knock sensor that they checked and gave it a clean and that was fine. So Ill have to wait till I can pick up a new coil pack from GSF next week and see what happens.
-
Bet the dizzy timing is out or the hall sensor at fault.
-
Dizzy is fine been checked twice,
-
I would say the timing is out
+1 sounds like its a tooth or two out, does it hit the limiter at 5k when you clog it in 1st/2nd?
If timing is out it will register as hall effect sensor on diagnostic tool
-
My car does the same thing at 5000rpm, the car freaks out if I hit 5000, it is new to me so I thought it was just supposed to do that. I'd like to know how you get on with this as its something I think is important for me to sort out on mine.
Thanks
Adrian
