Title: Are LED Rears available as a dealer retrofit?
Post by: buzz941 on 07 June 2011, 08:33
Hi there, I'm a newbie to the site, can anyone tell me whether the LED rear lights can be retrofitted by a VW dealer?  Annoyingly, they weren't an option when I ordered my GTi, it's a January 2010 build and has got the bi-xenons.  I called my local dealer and they said no, but I didn't get a feeling the guy was in a particularly helpful mood or had done much research etc.

Looking at the other posts, it sounds like it's not a straight swap-out, but requires replacement wiring and/or control units, in which case I'll probably give up because it all sounds rather complicated!  I'm not technical enough to do anything more than remove the old ones and plug in a replacement part.  And I want to stick to genuine VW parts so I don't invalidate the warranty.  I know this could get expensive but they look amazing!  Cheers

The short answer is no.

Heres a how too though, that may help you.

You can buy the adaptor leads from ebay or ebay Germany has them cheaper, rather than make your own.

Its basically plug + Play + Coding for your car as its more or less the same age as mine.

I would also get the R LED's and not the GTI LED's. The R's are more darker and look far better imo.

+1 R LED's all the way.

I don't see why the dealer shouldn't be able to fit them to the car. After all there a VW part that your likely to buying them through them anway.

Maybe print off the install guide for the dealers to show them.

I retrofitted mine myself with the help of SteveP who did the coding for me

Thanks for pointing me to the 'how to', very thorough!  Plus the advice on the smoked R's.  I'm now off to talk to my local dealer to see if they'll do it for me and what it'll cost (lots no doubt).  I'll report back!

Failing that, there's plenty of people on here that will do the coding for you for a few beer tokens!

Not me though. :embarassed:

If i was in their shoes i would be reluctant due to unauthorised coding, non genuine VW wiring harness, unknown current draw, unknown side effects of the code change.

Agreed^^^^ I can't see many dealers taking the risk with the conversion. They do colour by numbers and if it ain't a VW approved retro fit they'll probably run a mile unless you have a friend or relative who works in the service department at a main dealer.

There is enough pooled info on here and helpful local VCDS owners to retro fit the lights. Think yourself lucky buzz, you've got the easy end to retro fit. Those of us wanting to retro fit xenons have a completely different kettle of slippery fish to deal with!

Welcome to the forum BTW.

I have finally decided to give in to the inevitable and swap my rear bog standard lights for the LED rears (the R ones of course).  I went to the local dealers to see how much they would charge and was plesantly surprised as they quoted me £450 for the lot, gave me a reasonable discount, so I have ordered them.

Strangely they had the off side lights in stock but had to order the others.

At the same time I enquired about coding them in (Steve P has kindly offered if I meet up with him), but though I would enquire. They say that they cannot get the required information from VW to do this, but if I supply it they will undertake it!!!!!!!!!

Might let them have a go as they are very local to me

Mustard, that's a bloody good price at £450. I take it that's vw crawley you went to?There a doddle to fit especially if your buy the wiring adapters. You local to me so you welcome to take a look at mine. SteveP kindly coded mine in for me as I don't have the facility to do this.

Yes Martin, it was Crawley VW, nobody was as surprised as me with the quoted price, I've seen a couple of Golfs with the lights recently, which got me thinking I ought to do it, a black GTI in France, which I followed for some time and a white R parked up, so I had a good look round. Thanks for the offer.

Just go for it now. They won't get any cheaper.
When one brakes, they are so bright that the driver behind one keeps his/her distance or gets blinded!  :smug:

And if Mr Pound has offered to code for you snap his hand off, he may even help you fit them for far less than what the dealer will do them for and he will take far less time.
