Title: Diff play
Post by: Ade244 on 05 June 2011, 12:31
Hi - Just picked up a 16V box from ebay  really should know better but
done it now. Was hoping this one was better than the one I pulled off but...

Noticed some play if you grab the flanges there's some slight up and down and side to side play.
Is this something I can live with or should it be looked at is my question?

If I need to fix it, how simple is this job, can it be done without a full strip down?

Cheers

Any thoughts? Is a bit of play OK..... or should I dig deeper before bolting it on.

Any play will be the bearings and it is not easy to replace them

Cheers I'm thinking of risking it now. I'm suspecting it wasn't rebuilt properly as the previous
owner said it had a rebuild 26K miles ago. Bearing pre load I guess, Seems on searching others have this prob
after a rebuild.

I'll get my other box sorted while this ones in the car at least the cars back on the road, been sat in a garage for a year now waiting for my mojo to come back for it...

STOP!

To put it in perspective, I replaced my gearbox BECAUSE of the play in the diff.

Broken diff rivets may also be the culprit. They should have been replaced by bolts if it had a rebuild, but it sounds like that's turning into a big 'if'...

Surely it is more economical to just run with it for now and if it gets worse change the box?
