Title: Technical help for Mk3 16v
Post by: neilsgti16v on 04 April 2005, 09:15
I have a MK3 Golf GTI 16V (1996), aboout 3 years ago my problems started. On long journeys, particularly motorway driving, after an hour or so the engine would 'missfire', if I stopped for a bit, to let it cool down!?! and continued the car would run ok. Changing the distributer cap resolved the problem for another year, then the same thing would happen. It recently happened and then the car wouldn't idle at all, the garage plugged in the computer and reset the 'system' which cleared the problem. But just doing some town driving the other day the 'missfiring' returned. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be, or has anyone else had the same problem. It has done 150k, mostly motorway driving but still goes 'really well'. Could it be engine management computery related? An electrical problem or what? Any help appreciated, Cheers.

could possibly be coil or MAF  related?

take a good look around the MK3 section here.
