Title: Rings?
Post by: Bellend on 04 June 2011, 16:28
Never had any experiance in rings but does this sound like rings?

Haven't even looked at the engine yet but basically my oil light comes on on idle. I thought this was because it idled low and at 800 revs it went out. Doesn't do it at all when cold but now, when it's hot the oil light is coming on at higher revs. It's now on until 1300 revs. This has slowly increased from 800 etc.

It's raising slowly. Head was rebuilt and held pressure perfectly.

Oil has been changed every 3k so far.

Oil strainer is clean, pump is fine. Had it all off before deciding the 1.4 throttle body was causing too low idle, which it is but it revs fine and oil lights shouldn't be on at 1k.

I suppose I will get a pressure gauge on it, you can smell oil burning now though and I think it's blowing out the exhaust.

Well if it is burning oil then you have a ring problem or stem seals.

Pressure issues when warm points to rings doesn't it though? Cheers I'll actually look at it today.

you could always try a new pressure sensor..

+1

Did you get an oil pressure guage on in yet?
What check did you do to ensure that the pump is not at fault?

If you suspect rings then a cylinder leak down test is in order

First step, get the oil pressure tested.

If you think its rings then do a compression test!

Worn/leaking rings or stem seals won't cause oil pressure issues! But one or both probably is responsible for the burnt oil smell.

Oil pressure problems can only come from pressurised oil passages, so blocked with crap, cracked or my guess is oil pump on the way out.
