As above really looking at buying this but really not up on the mk2 gti, can any of you eagle eyed people spot anything a miss???

Thanks

From what I can see if you've got the $ buy it.
-
IF it's rust free and the respray is good then...mmmmm?
I would want to see all the details as to what he has "restored".
IMHO I wouldnt part with £4600 for it.
Depending on your mechanical experience and time available, you could pic up a MK2 with good bodywork for peanuts and spend a few hundred quid "restoring" it yourself.
As ever....buy on bodywork condition. Everything else can be replaced for very little money and common sense spannering.
Take note that a windows out bare shell respray will cost about £2k for a good un'

Very nice!

Define "peanuts", and then provide examples....

I am not practical at all so would want to buy one that is pretty much there, i have been to look at it tonight and the respray is a good job, as a whole it seams a nice car but then again what do i know, thats why i am asking you guys...
-
Looks ok but it depends on the standard of work that has been carried out.
-
That car is virtually the the same history/background as my car, although mileage is about 10k more on that car. If the shell was rust free to start with pre restoration, then it wants snapping up regardless of the price (obviously without seller taking the piss too much) you could easily end up spending thousands putting the body back to how it should be, cars like this don't hang around for long, if in any doubt, get an independent engineers report for piece of mind, the crucial thing with this car would be previous rot, and accident damage... for me, it should have none at the price.
worth paying a little over the top? absolutely!

why hasnt it got lekky windows? and why has it got rainbow interior?
Is it because its big bumper model :undecided:
mine has lekky windows and green pin strip but small bumpers,
Bit expensive but if its like new inside, outside and underneath and full S/H and you have the cash

I had these thoughts too, however i think there was about a 6 month period when the leccy windows were dropped from the gti's...not sure about the seats???
-
The devils in the details. I would crawl all over it with a torch looking for serious rust or repaired damage first. On the face of it it looks very very good.
If you try it the way I did, bought a fair condition 100K (so they said, more like 168K) 92 16V and then replaced just about everything on it the money soon mounts up. Plus if you haven't got the time or inclanation to get dirty then get the best one you can.

Looks a nice car to me...
2 things that stand out to me as none standard are the Bee Sting & the Rainbow Interior but with a 20 year old car some mods or changes are bound to have taken place...
You say you have been to see it, did all the papers stack up to what he has written? can he prove that he is a qualified VW technical?
Did you barter on the price... I would - I wouldn't be paying more than £4K for it, as that's what I reckon a GOOD MK2 and full respray would set you back... My 8V digi cost me just under that (£1500.00 Car - £2K respray with a few parts wing, tailgate etc)...
I would get someone who really knows Mk2's to go with you and check it out...

Very nice car.
But having a laugh with the price.
-
Thats the thing ade, i haven't got the inclination or time, i want to buy something that has been done, he has proved that he is a vw tech, i am happy with that, i dont really know anyone that knows mk2's inside out but do know someone that used to be and audi tech and now works for an accident investagation company and does all there vehicle inspections so am going to take him with me, i kind of agree that i shouldn't pay anymore than 4k but really if i can get it for £4300 then whats £300!!1
Thanks for all the advice
also i think the price is not far off considering all the paperwork he has for what hes done to the car, there isn't too many previous mots but a full service history, he also saysd he will get a new hpi check from work done and give me that.....

AFAIK & Stand to be corrected... but for its age a Wing mounted Arial and a boring checked interior... But as we all know the drivers seats just dont last 20 years...
If these have been done them IMO it has not devalued the car - it's made it more saleable...
I think the rear lights maybe additions too - as I thought these 3 items all came post 90 on 16V's - BUT as I said I stand to be corrected.
-
£4K would be my limit... is he going to lose a sale for £300.00... Not in the current climate... It's a buyers market even with High end cars like this... Rare they maybe but if you look hard enough they do pop up now and again and they don't tend to sell that quickly..
I keep watching ebay everyday for cars like this... :nerd:
-
I thought all valvers had beestings, and 8vs had the wing aerial.
Looks proper tidy, wouldn't pay a penny over £4k for it though, personally.

does look really good esp in the flesh, would it bother people about the slightly scuffed bumpers, i have spoken to the guy and he says he will swap them for me if i pay for them and the spraying of the front one....only if i pay the aking price...

You maybe right but as I say I thought these were post 90 items - could be this was one of the first....
Seats are an addition as the door cards don't match the rainbow interior as I "think" raindows had the red stripe cards...
Has it got central locking? Should have as it dont have ellecy windows, mirrors or door speakers (Which I would want to be adding at a later date £300.00 would buy all these!!)... but does have the door bellows between A pillar and doors...

At his asking price I would expect as near perfection as you can get.... Did notice the front bumper did look a bit bent... The cars 20 year old ALWAYS bear that in mind...

the guy seems to think all are original....alhough like i say i am no expert
what do you mean about the door bellows..and yes it does have central locking.
-
where the wires go between the a pillar and the door.. 5th pic between the door hinges
-
Bumpers are like Tits... They sag over the years...
They look orginal but its hard to see from the pics.. But still at 4K I would have expected them to be re-painted when the car was done...

What does that mean??
easier to do leccy windows and stuff
tbh i am not bothered too much about leccy windows i just want to know it is right and not some misssmatch, i have an 11 plate a4 black edition for luxury!!!
thanks for all the advice..

Let me know what you think!!

Have to say that's REALLY one tidy car....
Interior is superb... Parcel Shelf nice and straight... Both are some of the best I've seen...
It really is a NICE looking car... Just a pity about the bent front bumper...
£4K would still be my limit... and not a penny more... with the front bumper sorted...
Have you driven it yet?
IMO
-
Yes had a few miles in it, not driven one before but it did feel very good for a car of this age.
-
It looks a nice, tidy, honest example in the pictures.
It looks to be exactly the same spec as mine when I got it. Rainbow seats, manual windows, no door speakers and a bee sting. It should have a bung in the aerial hole in the n/s wing. I can't make it out on the photos, so it may have been deleted. If it has, the wing will have been painted. Why?
The modernish cd player looks a bit out of place so would need changing for something more retro.
I would say that £4000 was all it's money, but no doubt there will be someone out there who will be happy to pay the full price for it. It would be a pity to miss out on it for £600. These cars don't come along very often.
-
I might of missed something, as i've not read all the posts, but those bumpers aren't original.
Big bumpers didn't come in till 1990.
Has someone already said that?

Hmmm interesting, I'm sure I have seen 89s with big bumpers (90 spec) car is also a K jet, and also has under bonnet felt, hence the warning stickers on the slam panel, instead of the inside of the bonnet... this is something that you see on later cars... I have the feeling that this car is correct, as you see it, later bumpers could have been specified by the owner, in lieu of the electric windows perhaps?
shouldn't be hard to find out the true spec of the car, with the build codes printed on the VIN sticker in the boot.

Big bumpers didn't come in to August 1990, i'm pretty sure about that.
All 16v engines were k-jet in the mk2.

Brochures featuring "90 spec" cars were definitely released in 89

Well went to see it again last night and although it is a very nice car i don't think i will be buying....
So, anyone who knows of a perfect 16v gti for sale then let me know, i may also look at getting something that needs a little work maybe even a respray!!! anyone with links to what they deem to be good ones then post away..
Thanks for all your help

90 spec cars date from approx September 1989. It's no different today. If you bought a new Golf today, chances are it would be a model year 2012.
My car was registered on 02-01-1990, but only because the first owner wanted it to be registered as a 1990. I'm sure he could have had it before Christmas. If he had it would have been registered as a 1989.

So, why did you decide against it?
Thom
-
90 spec definitely came in in 1989.
If this isn't a 90 spec, then the owner went to a *LOT* of trouble to make it one, i.e.
-added big bumpers, and correct door rub strips, and side skirts
-fitted full rainbow interior, including correct door cards
-fitted smoked rear lights
-converted to CE2
-added larger airbox and 50mm inlet manifold
6-speakers weren't standard until towards the end of the production run, and for some reason all the G-reg (90 spec) valvers I've seen don't have electric windows!
In the words of Rafa... if it is white, and in a bottle, then it is milk!
The car looks good - I'm guessing it is a little too pricey?
-
I think the main reason was that at that sort of cash the car needs to be mint!!!, this car was very very good but needed perhaps a few hundred £££ spending on new bumpers, trims and arches...
So offered a little less than asking price, the guy wants to see what the ads bring in terms of offers, he wants pretty much the asking price as thats what it pretty much owes i think, can't say fairer than that..
