Title: What is this for???
Post by: Seanl on 02 June 2011, 17:43
Started stripping the bay out today after an eventful w.end with 4 hours on the hard shoulder of the M5 (j26). Water was boiling off and disapearing somewhere, and oil temp was 160! (I know I should have checked sooner!) . Anyway, thought it was probs the oil cooler and/or head gasket, but gonna strip the whole engine and start from scratch. Worth noting though that although the expansion tank has a little mayo and starting to smell of oil, I drained the oil today, and there is no evidence of water in it. Have also just realised, that the fuel pump wasnt priming. Used to be very obvious, but now I get a very faint hum (you have to strain to hear it). I can hear the relay clicking, and feel it as well. Whilst doing it today though, I noticed this -

Sorry for the crap pics, but its a break in the cable that disapears behind the filter housing, and is attached to a plug on the front engine mount. Anyone know what it is, and could it be linked to my probable many problems??

Yep crank sensor, its a very common problem that the cable cracks up causing the wires to touch and engine fail to start.

Ah ok thanks. That obviously explains the non starting, but not the disapearing of water, high oil temps, fuel pump not working, and probably a hundred other things that seem to have gone wrong all at the same time! To think most would scrap it, but ohhh nooooo, not my baby.

Well its nowhere near that bad, having said that, I have had a leak at the bottom of the rad for months, and had to keep topping up until 2 weeks ago when I fitted a new one, so may have been masking how bad it really was. Hopefully just the cooler but as I'm taking the engine out for a bit of a referb, I'm gonna change the head gasket anyway.

If it turns out to be the head-gasket, I can sell you a sweet engine for £50 (8v AGG).
