Title: To iPad or not to iPad?
Post by: Dan n Nic on 02 June 2011, 12:14
I'm looking to buy myself a tablet, and had almost decided that I was going to pay the extorsionate amount and buy an ipad, until I found this
http://uk.store.creative.com/entertainment-devices-mp3-players/ziio-10/948-20230.aspx (http://uk.store.creative.com/entertainment-devices-mp3-players/ziio-10/948-20230.aspx)

My question is, has anyone else got an android based tab and what do you think of it? The thing I like about this over the iPad is the fact that you can use a SD card so you are not just stuck with the 8/16GB.

Any CONSTRUCTIVE advice/comments gratefully received.

I have a netbook with approx 7 hrs batt life. Half the price of an iPad.

Why bother?

I've never understood the point of an iPad, I know they say less is more, but in this case it just isn't :)

There are plenty of alternatives, that one is using an older version of Android. Look for one running Android 3, otherwise called Honeycomb.

Most will be running the nVidia Tegra 2 CPU, which is pretty good but newer CPU's are coming out and early next year we will see QUAD core's in Phones and Tablets (that's like having 4 CPU's/Processors).

The Motorola Atrix is quite cool, as is the new Asus EEE Transformer that's a tablet but docks as an Android netbook/laptop.
There are also dual booting Android/Windows 7 tablets, Viewsonic is one of the rebranders.

The iPad is fine for most people, but I don't like being locked down into their ecosystem (anyone saying 'but aren't you being locked down to Google's ecosystem' doesn't know a thing about Android and/or Openness). I also like being a geek and installing different ROMs.

I brought my wife an ipad2 I found it to be very quick for web browsing but on the downside you cannot run flash video and most apps you have to pay for. I am going to get an android based tablet for myself far more free apps and you can run flash video, you would be surprised how many websites use flash player.

from all the reviews I've read the ipad is a good bet if you're not technically minded and don't want to mess about with it.

Pros for the ipad:
great customer support
good support from developers as it is currently the market leader
widest rang of apps available
the "trendy" choice
easy to use experience and similar to the iphone/ipod touch (if you have one of those already)
build quality
good battery life
lots of accessories
powerful enough to play 720p movies

Cons for the ipad:
the "trendy" choice
expensive compared to Android tablets
can only purchase apps that are on itunes

if you can live with the limitations of Apple and itunes then the ipad is the one to go for.

and not forgetting it's no replacement for a PC/Laptop as you need a PC/Laptop to sync with and set it up in the first place.

Where as Android tablets you don't need to sync with a PC/Laptop as all the important bits get sync'd to Google's servers then sync'd down to your web browser IE/FF with Google's add-on's or Chrome does it automagically without add-ons. For any other files that you need to sync with your PC/Laptop there is Dropbox, or you can just plug it into your PC/Laptop and sync it.

Android is not just for geeks

Ok, so bought "what laptop" guide to tablets magazine today, and am reading and re-reading and the only ones that come fairly close to the ipad are either not out yet or run windows 7. I am also going to the states in a few weeks so if I am going to get on I will probably get it whilst I am out there, unless anyone knows any reason not to (wifi only)?
Title: Re: To iPad or not to iPad?
Post by: Jack3559 on 02 June 2011, 22:07
Wifi only is the best option if you've got a phone that'll tether up.

Don't get any 3G tablets out there! Most of their 'Carriers' (mobile companies as we call them) use a different technology to the rest of the world that matters (and to EACHOTHER!) so you WON'T be able to easily use a 3G ipad/ipad2 here on a UK 3G contract.

If I were in the market for a tablet now I'd get the Asus EEE Transformer or Motorla Atrix, tablet/phone (respectively)  one minute - laptop/netbook the next. Pretty damned cool.

You do need to plug it in for an initial setup, but the apple shop will do that.

Well as she's on facebook 24/7 so I messaged her. Apple store set it up for her when she bought it and they email her when updates are out and she pops in and gets it done over a coffee. Easy for her though, she lives and works in central London.

The only thing I worry about with windows is it slowing as does a laptop or desktop machine the more you use it and put on it and as it ages?

I've not found that on Windows 7 tbh, Windows XP realyl suffered that because it didn't do 'house keeping tasks' itself, Vista and 7 do.

I've not read all of the replies but we had this discussion at work the other day. The boss has an Ipad and another lifeguard has a notebook. Ipad looks very nice and in terms of street cred it's higher but over half of us rather have a notebook as you can do more with it and overall it's a better package.

I'll be tempted by an AndyPad for me and the wife each, £130 with 7" screen 1.2Ghz CPU, full HD 1080p playback and a whole lot more cha-ching! The images make it look similar to the Galaxy Tab 7", which we both liked.

It does look very nice in the adverts and has surpassed my expectations. I was expecting a boring device... I was wrong.

Only problem with the BB is that the app market is bare.

There's also no e-mail and no contact/calendar sync unless you're in Bluetooth range of a BB phone.

Out of all the alternatives galaxy tab is the most polished contender.

I may be getting rid of my iPad soon though, because I've just built a PC and got rid of the iMac so I want a 13" MBP to take out and about instead.

I did advise the wife that a notebook is a better option but she, being a woman, fell for the whole apple marketing crap. Having mucked about with it (I had to set it up so she can use it) I still don't see the point of an ipad.

They are fun, but there is a lot more functionality to be had in a full fat laptop/netbook.

The apps and stuff you can get for iPad are awesome, pages, numbers and keynote work fantastically.

But if you ever wanted to use a proper program CS3/Cubase/Logic whatever... You can't, you cam only get the skinny version built for iPad with a snazzy interface.

Saying that, most netbooks would run CS3/Cubase like a bag of sh¡t anyway.
