Who wins?
Both standard, 1 mile of striaght road
Posted this on the ford website and wanted to know wot u lot think?
It'll be intresting!

I've come up against these many years ago, and they were never too much of a problem to despatch.
Maximum speed : 133mph (213km/h)
0-60 mph : 8,3s
0-100 mph : 22,2s
1/4 mile : 16,4s
They have a higher top speed (apparently), but the 0-60 is slower, and i'm sure i'm clocking my 16v to 100 klepton per parsec at around 17-18 at the moment.
Discounting my car though - it be a hard fought out battle between a chavved up Escort and a thrashed 16v with a K&N and lightened tappets.
-
just had a gander and they kick out 148bhp and 140lb/ft torque, which is quite torquey! And the car weighs 1165kg which means 127bhp/ton which is 22bhp/ton less than the golf but don't underestimate torque!!! would be a good race!!
-
hmmm, toughy, i love me golfs, and my 16v which i got rid of in november was no slouch (1/4 mile in 16.00 secoonds flat, with a full tank of fuel, 2 ton of ice, and half an engine in the boot amongst other things!!) lol, but ive also had a mk5 escort rs2000, yeah they look naff, seats are good, and yes they are quick, id like to put em against each other (in standard form) would be a good little gamble.. not saying which i think would win......
mind you half of its down to the driver anyways!! lol
-
It would be the escort because the golf driver would be so busy laughing at how bad the escort looks that he would forget to
accelerate
-
I knew of a mk1 20vt that could have his friends 450bhp Escort Cossie!
My point, so much is down to power to weight ratio
-
Sorry to change the subject slightly but does anyone have any idea how a mk2 valver would compare to a mk3 Astra GSi?
i was having a conversation with my brother (who has a renault 19 16v which is slower than my valver!!) and he reckons an astra would absolutly kill a valver???
-
your spot on G6dub. a perpect example is the caterham they only produce about 120-150 bhp but ar capable of doing 0 - 60 in
about 4 secs. As you said its down to power/weight ratio

The only Astra that beat the 16v was the GTE. There were some provisos though:
1. if you found a corner the Astra would instantly lose. not that the 16v corners well, but it did so much much better than the Astra.
2. if you were racing in the dark. The Astra had a couple of candles up front. The Golf has football flood lights in comparison.
The GTE owners i used to know told me the above as I wouldn't try and race them.

can also agree on the above by tinman, if its an early mk3 16v gsi, (2ltr red top engine) im sorry to say but in a straight line it would have the edge,in corners also as tin man said they are boats!! lol, the mk2 ashtray gte 16v is even worse on the handling side, but even quicker than its younger brother so beware, they may be old but on a straight line they are quick, 150bhp as standard, and mk3 gsi's have a cat on and still push that power!!,
ive had 8v and 16v mk2 gte's and there no slouches, all depends on the driver and state of tune...... (for every day roadplay that is!!)
-
dont fords come with nuts and bolts in the sump as standard? and would it even get to the end of a mile?
-
its right!
a lot yo do with the driver "has he/she got the balls" and the power to weight ratio!
i was taking the valver to work the other night and had a play with a mk4 xr3i that had a bit of chav modding done to it and he kept with me but did'nt have the balls!
ford=fixed or repaired daily! :grin:
whereas i got totally stripped by an ashtray 16v on the by-pass (no corners)
