Hi i have a 1996 mkiii cl automatic and it tends to buck and punch itself into first gear sometimes. It will do this most often after a downshift from a full stop. It will do this one or twice and then stop doing this for the rest of the trip. It feeks as if a lot of damage is being dobe to the transmission. Lately it is having trouble upshifting as well not just into first but other gears as well. Since the transmission is sealed i can't check the fluid level.
Any help please?
Shouldn't volkswagen service these auto transmissions for free? I mean the lifetime guarantee should allow for free inspections of the transmission when it is acting up.
Help me out people as i love this car.
Not fair vw that you make a car with a "sealed" transmission.
Can't even check the fluid level.
-
Specialists can drain and refill the gearbox oil.
-
Well and wont that cost more than the car is worth?
-
You will be able to check the fluid level.
Is it like the Audi where the filler plug is underneath?
-
no idea...i think so...it's an 01M box.
Would be a cheap fix to simply top up the fluid..
-
So its a 1996, what's engine code?
I will try and check over the weekend.
-
I'll let you know as I don't have the owner's manual with me...
The car is in the parking lot at work...where do I find the engine code???
(is it that metal plate with all the details of the car???)
-
There should be a sticker in the boot under the carpet, or try the owners manual.

Any use to you?

Yes that helps.
There is a plug on the top of the sump, remove the cap and pull plug out of filler pipe.
ATF should trickle out of the level hole.
Test it when the gearbox is in park and the fluid is cooler than 30 degrees.
-
I dont know how to do that. Maybe you can go through that step by step or have a link with pictures on how to do so. Thanks.

I'll see if i can get the pics scanned tomorrow.
Its not that detailed, its off Elsa manual.

Thanks. Just wondering if the plug that is for the tranny needs to be rplaced or if it can be used again or if there is a gasket that is there as well. I suppose i could top up the fluid with a syringe through the plughole.
I've seen pictures which show you how to change the filter and get rid of the shavings if there are any.
I'm thinking of changing the brake pads, discs etc but it would be pointless if tge tranny fails. It's been acting up since i have owned it and that was probably the reason the previous owner sold it to me but didn't tell me.
A new tranny costs more than the car is worth and it looks like the car overheated at some time as there are old oil stains on the engine block.
Amazingly the car doesn't overheat and burns about 8l/100km.
The fan does go when driving in the city.
It seems bad that the former owner did not take care of it.
I'd like to keep it going, but don't know if it will be financially viable.

Checking and topping up ATF level
Topping up ATF
‒ Lever off plug securing cap -arrow- with a screwdriver. When doing this the cap locking device will be damaged, therefore always renew cap.
‒ → Pull plug out of filler pipe.
On some gearboxes a cap with a spring retainer is installed. This cap can be used again.

‒ → Fill with ATF using V.A.G 1924, until ATF runs out of level hole -arrow-.
An insufficient ATF filling as well as filling to excess affects the function of the gearbox.

‒ → Fit new seal to level plug -arrow 1- and tighten to 15 Nm.
‒ Fit sealing plug on filler pipe until the spring retainer lock locates, or
‒ Fit plug on filler pipe and secure with a new cap -arrow 2-.
‒ Lock cap.
Always renew cap. The cap secures the sealing plug.

Yeah thanks. I believe i'll have to buy a ne cap. Or if i am carefull enough will my model have a reusable?
What the hell is that number one pointing to?
I beleieve the gasket is gone on this tranny as i remember crawling under it when rotating the tyres.
That means ill probably need to buy a new gasket and replace it.
Wll worth a try o take a closer look first. It be a shame to kill this car just because if this. It's due for a mot in a month. So maybe the mechanc will be nice and tell me if the tranny is leaking.
I owned a nercury sable. The car stopped shifting, so i poured in some atf and away u went.
These german cars are real sensitive. Not something im used to.
At least the brakes are easy to work on.
The tranny is really noisy. Groans at 50 mph. I shifted into neutral one at 60 mph. The car was silent. Same sound when driving an 1978 chevy impala but in gear.
I miss those cars. My dad had a ford meteor. Those were the days when car maintenance was easier.
Ok enough ranting.
Do you think i need to use dealer atf or will halfords be good enough?
-
You fill no.2 with ATF, no.1 is your level plug.
Basically put ATF in no.2 until it trickles out of no.1.
As for the ATF, make sure you get the correct spec, whether its from a dealer or motor factors.
-
Ok I understand now.
So the cap for number two I can pick up at the dealer?
For number one-i need to just buy the gasket?
Sorry abou5t these questions, but I'm a real knob when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Whatever the guide says i think, if it says replace then replace it.
All i've done is take the guide of ELSA, hope it makes it clearer
-
Ok thanks for all of the info. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Good luck
