Title: using a lot of oil...
Post by: andynorfolk on 30 May 2011, 14:54
have had the oil pressure checked and it's absolutely spot on, but in the space of a few hundred miles of driving (admittedly i was giving it some) the oil has gone from the max on the dipstick to just below the min...

this seems like a hell of a lot of oil used... any ideas? cheers

Sorry to state the obvious, but oil leak ?

I think you need to give us a bit more info.

i haven't noticed any oil leaking though :S

and the oil pressure being fine makes it seem a bit strange...

if there is a leak where is it most likely to leak from?

If you lost that much (think it will be approx 0.75L between marks) you should be able to see a leak. Daft question, when you checked the levels did you push the dipstick far enough back in ? Also, is there blue smoke coming out of the exhaust ? That would suggest burning some oil.

valve stem oil seals gone ? burning oil blue smoke coming from the rear ?

i definately put the dipstick in deep enough aha

and there hasn't been any blue smoke from the exhaust...

i've parked it over a piece of cardboard so i can see if it's dripping and where it's dripping from

You're either wrong and messed up your checks or you've got an oil leak. It can't be anything else.

If you have not got a leak then it must be burning it.

allways worth checking that the oil's not finding it's way into the water. no uncommon for the oil cooler to fail and it to pump the coolant full of oil

When checking ur oil did u leave it some time after 'giving it some' b4 re-checking as if u read it straight away u could get a faulse reading

You checked the back of your car, the mk2 has some mad as air flow on the rear (hence why it gets mega dirty on the arse end quick) and may be lathered in oil on the rear. Just a thought

if the oil cooler has failed would that also cause the oil light to flash on the dash...? as this is permanently flashing but the oil pressure is spot on and both switches have been replaced
