Anyone know of a guide for headgasket change on a 1800 carb cabroilet?
Do i need many tools or much experience?
Thanks
-
Not a major job and easier on a 8v.
You will need a spline drive bit for the headbolts plus you will need new ones as they are stretch bolts also worth fitting a new cambelt.
Leave the manfolds on if you can.
-
You dont need any experience, just take your time and mark everything (mark your cam belt using tipex)
-
cheers
also do i need a torque wrench for the bolts?
-
will this do the job?

Theres a more expensive set on GSF, idk if the quality differs?
Thanks

Looks ok, but I would go for a better / known quality head gasket.

As wayne said go for GSF brand name head gasket, iirc the gasket on its own should be 19quid or somthing and the bolts come to just over a tenner (at least with the mk2 16v but I cant imagine its much different). You NEED a torque wrench to tighten the head bolts IN ORDER and in stages, should be two nm values and then 180deg or somthing similair. Not much effort but it has to be done, you can borrow one for half an hour and be done with it but they are always worth having for suspension and stuff. As for the order it should come with the gasket on a bit of paper but essentially it starts from the middle and works out diagonally so would be 5,6,3,8,4,7 etc if you call 5,6 the centre working top to bottom.

Yes you can

If its the same as a mk2 then yes. Also you need to replace these bolts as they are stretch bolts. Also make sure you work clean.

good luck with this.... make lots of clear marks when doing the belt and try not to move things too much once the belt is off. But then as long as you have marked up all the wheels and pulleys positions you can't go too wrong...

Unless you run a NHS style operation and casually leave random tools/rags/parts inside the bores
