Hi guys,
My mate fathers mk4 GTI has a weird problem,
Symptoms;
When starting the vehicle, the whole car vibrates and when engine speed is increased the vibration gets worse, the management light isn't on and its a 1999 T plate 1.8t. The vehicle has been in the garage for 3 days and they aint been able to figure out the problem (Back street garage NOT MAIN DEALER)
Has anyone come across this problem before,

i was told when they engine shakes (vibrates its misfiring) has it been scanned for codes?
-
no not yet but im going up in the morning with my diagnostic kit, i thought if its a misfire the management light will appear on the dash, but could be wrong,
-
could be dual mass failing ?
-
engine light does not always come on if miss fireing
-
ok, will check, am i right in assuming its a agu engine and does not have coil on plug setup

they have coilpacks on each cylinder
-
i thought that was only vehicle's from 2000+ and not the early ones
-
There is no management light on an early T AGU
They have coilpacks on each cylinder as said, my guess is the ignition amp which wont throw a code.
That or the MAF again may not throw a code
-
ok will check tomorrow thanks for the info,

Come back and let us know how it goes as im sure we can help you sort it

much appreciated
-
Sounds like a misfire, coilpack could be the cause.
-
No broken engine or dog bone mounts are there?

after a diagnosis scan, came back as the air mass meter, so changed that and its working fine, can't understand how a fully operational garage couldn't find the problem. I'm a final year student with a diagnostic tool, if they do have them how come they didn't use it.
(Thanks for your advise much appreciated).
