IIRC you have to remove the airbag to fit it.

Well, that's that. Not removing an old bag to get that new bit on. I'll simply have to stay bling.
-
Now i have to try and figure out if it just pushes in or slides in(which meens removing the airbag.)

Its like a half push in stud, which makes me think it slides in :undecided:

That looks like you just pop it out of the rubbery part of the wheel to me? Start at the bottom maybe with a trim tool.

This forum makes me chuckle.
In the Mk1 and 2 sections you get people telling of how they have clambered over cars at the breakers to take a 50p part from a Austin Maxi, then get it into their workshop where they have welded and filed and ground it to make it fit some part of their Mk1-2 in order to keep it on the road for a few more months. You make your way through the Mk3, 4 and 5 sections until you get here. The Mk6 section. Where people can't figure out how to replace a clip on badge on their steering wheel.
Maybe it's just me, but part of the fun of owning a car is doing jobs on it myself, whether it be my Mk2 or my Mk6.
-
Thing is though, people will be climbing round scrap yards in 20 years trying to find bits for there mk6 while mk13 owners will be trying doing the same thing as we are now.
It's a little thing but thats what these forums are for, big and small advice. Mk5 owners were doing the same things 5 years ago.

So i don't want to damage a £400 steeringwheel
I have run a mk1 for over 21 years and done a nut and bolt bare metal restoration on it in that time by myself (excluding top coat). I also have a 60s mini i did the same too including full paint. I am in the process of restoring a 50s Armstrong siddley at the moment. I do things properly unlike those guys you talk about.

It's not a dig at you Snoopy, it's just the general impression I get in this section of the forum.

You've all gone mad for a GTI bit of plastic  brilliantly obsessed

We all get it Dubber36- not many hardcore VW nutters in here to be fair

Depends what you class as VW nutters. If you meen bodge merchants no theres not.
But i have been into VWs all my life and restored 3 mk1s of my own and built two mk1 16Vs for friends (using scirocco 16V manifolds so it was done correctly ) and know most things about them. People who know me seem to class me as a VW nutter but it often depresses me looking at some of the modified tat on other sections of this forum.

Anyway back on topic.
MR. Bojo to the rescue
Dam that was tightly fitted

Yes but it really held on well. The new one just snapped into place.
I tried with my fingers pulling at each side at first but it was easier to use a Bojo tool to help it from the sides.
I need a new camera
-
Nice one Snoops! Might get one and give it a go.
-
Snoops I don't class you as a VW nutter, just a nutter.

.. and some of us are just here for the drive the car gives us

Maybe the older mk gti owners are not aware, but that steering wheel that we dont want to damage is worth more than their full cars, thats why we are a bit more careful and cautious.

As an older Mk GTI owner as well as a Mk6 owner, I am full aware of how much certain parts of the Mk6 cost. It doesn't stop me having a go myself though.
With the Mk6, if I break something, a call to TPS and some money spent will see the part replaced in a couple of days. With the Mk2, if I break something, there will be alot of searching and probably quite a long wait until a suitable replacement part can be tracked down.
It's all relative really. With both cars, being carefull and methodical and most jobs will be doable with satisfying results.

But is it not worth trying to find out how something comes apart first before damaging £300+ worth or parts

I know just what you mean as I asked for advice on how to remove the door card when I had to change the door mirror on my car a couple of weeks back, but in this case, you had the replacement part in your hand. Surely this would have given a pretty strong clue as to how it was attached.
Again I wasn't questioning your practical competence, just making a generalisation about many of the topics in this section.

He didn't ask how to fit it when it arrived! I did.

If you re-read the thread you will see i did not get the part till yesterday. You will also see that i question how it maybe held on due to the layout of the pins only been half pins, which i have seen used before when things slide into place and locate not push in  I also recalled someone else ,SteveP iirc, a while back saying you had to remove the airbag to change it as they slide in. So i questioned how it maybe held on.
Sorry if this upsets you but i don't have £300 to throwaway taking chances maybe you do i don't. So i did the logical common sense thing and asked others who may have took one off before how it was held on.

Snoops was perfectly correct and cautious regarding installation of the wheel badge. Even my dealership was not too sure. I think dubber36 has lost the plot a bit!
-
^ So you going to change yours too

^ So you going to change yours too
I would like to but can't do it myself as I have only one strong functioning arm. I'll wait for Darren when he is in London next to do it to my steering wheel. He's very deft and I'd be daft to try it myself.
-
Geoff
What's the tool like that you used to remove your badge?
Mine is a little loose at the top already so might mention it to the dealer when it is in tomorrow for the A pillar trims replacing(!)

Change hands every now and then when beating it mate, keeps both arms in top condition.
