Title: Car back after failed MOT
Post by: the_stink on 28 May 2011, 17:51
Just got home from work and read through all the things they said had failed and just went out to the car, now one thing they mention is a weird whirring noise which has all of  a sudden developed and also the batt light is also now on?

Just seems a bit convenient that I take it to the garage and all of a sudden there are problems that need to be sorted that werent happening about 9 hours ago

and it also looks like they didnt use a seat cover as well! driver seat is filthy

Check your alternator belt Joe, its likely its either that, or the alternator itself giving up the ghost...

Surely they cant fail for 'a weird wining noise' and yes, alternator issues (thinking this without reading the rest)  :lipsrsealed:

replacing the alternator shouldn't* take you too long either, if it is that.. don't book it in for that

*unless its a mk1 with a fcuked alternator bolt

As soon as you loosen the main bolt after the tensioner from the altanator you arent sure if its removing itself or you are.

Before you start thinking about getting a new alternator, check the brushes. They may be worn.  This is why the red battery warning light comes on.  Whirring noise - as said - could be the belt or a worn bearing.   Brushes-belt-WD40.

make sure your blue exciter wire is plugged into the alternator. It wont charge if this isnt plugged in.
