Title: Removing the Airbag System Unit - nut just turns on the spot and wont come off.
Post by: chiefwhosm on 28 May 2011, 10:27
Hi,
So I'm currently removing the airbag system unit (or what some people refer to as the airbag ecu).

The drivers side nuts came off with a few turns of the socket, however the passenger side ones have been a right pain.

One has sheared off (well I guess it's off at least - albeit breaking the thread off with it  ) but the last one to undo just turns in position, without showing any signs of moving up or down the thread when you turn it either with sockets/spanners.

I've tried:

1) Just using the socket/spanner.
2) Putting a screwdriver between it and the metal to push it as I turn it with a spanner, made no difference.
3) The mole grips I just bought, which seem next to useless as they don't grip anything I've tried them on but just slide off.
4) Flattening the metal of the bracket down to get part of a paint scraper in, in the hope of levering while using the spanner.

So any suggestions?

Chief :)

Edit: In the end I bought a nut splitter set, finally got the nut off in two pieces. :)

Can you not break them off with a cold chisel  :undecided:
