I'm seeing more and more Mk6's out on the roads these days, but strangely few of them have their DRL's turned on.
Whether you have Halogens, Xenons or Fairy lights, have you got yours on or have you turned them off. If so, why?
-
I do. Can't turn mine off and that's fine.
-
Oh, I forgot to add. I'm seeing 11 plate cars without them on too. Why's that then? Is the legislation that the car has to have them, but they don't have to work?
-
My Xenons are always on - why would you turn them off?

I come from a motorcycle background so I have DRL's on at a very minimum.

-
Mine are off.
Why?
Because of the model year of mine, the DRL are the main front xenons on with the rear lights also on.
I got sick of the funny looks and people asking why i had my lights on in bright sunshine.
So i turned them off.
-
Mine are off because the bulbs are yellow like an old man's teeth and I'm a tart.
If I had xenons I'd keep them on all the time........similarly because I'm a tart.

I don't mind people saying things 'why have you got your lights on' I'd rather hear that than 'sorry mate I didnt see you'

Halogens on mine and the DRL's I just leave on all the time
-
I've left mine on as a reminder to buy bloody xenons next time
-
Mine are off because they're hideous!
-
If I had my GTD I would have the LEDs on!

Exonian's quote:

Andy, I am 63, have no fillings and have a perfect set of white teeth. Can you better that?
I am also a mega tart with a heart! :smug:
Off to the pub to pick up some nice totty in their twenties!

In your case it will have to be toenails then
No fillings? Perfectly white? Orignals or retro-fits??? :smug:

Cheeky b!tches the lot of you. They are all originals. All to do with good genes and diet.
The indigenous population of this country is renowned for its bad teeth.

Mine are off at the mo as the yellow glow annoys me but I may switch them on for a change :smug:
If I can find some better replacement bulbs then I wouldn't mind them being on

Off, waste of fuel.

Off, waste of fuel.
Hardly.
Are you the type who also has the ACC and sound system off so that you can enjoy the tyre roar and the rattles from the gearbox and the Diesel engine?
-
I have mine on all the time too :)
I'm not a fortunate kid who has DRL's but my Xenons look cool and help with the safety, especially when they stay on after I park up at Tesco and people say 'you've left our lights on!' and I kindly respond with 'They go off after 20 seconds' as my wing mirrors fold up :D haha

I could always get the 30cm LED strips to around my headlights, do you think I'd look like an Audi Mr Asker? :D
(actually looked down in shame as I wrote that)

Sorry, did not mean that in a bad way. I don't fancy Audis. I did put the  sign up ..... twice!
Remember, I'm thinking of going for those cheapo £300 LED HID lights on Kenny's thread.
You may then get your own back on me with a vengence.
-
If I'm honest. I do like them :)
Only the black ones though, chrome ones look dire :(
If you need HIDs for them, I've got all the bits you'd need :) Surplus to requirements! Yours for the taking if you want them :)

Thank's Dan. You are a star. But I must pay you for them.
We'll talk when the time arrives.
-
Ok buddy :) No worries, just let me know. They are in classifieds section aswell, when was you thinking to get those lights? I think they'll suit Wolfgang very nicely :)

I had loads of people pull out on me when they were on, as i suspect they thought i had flashed them out. Were as since turning them off its not been an issue. (touch wood)

Ah but you see them reflected in the car in front when queuing and see others with theirs on and they don't 'add' to the look.
I wish there was a nice bright White bulb option for these

but if i can't this was my first post..... since i turned them off, i've had no probs.
Design flaw? DRL just almost got me killed.......again
Hi guys gals, sorry for the long post
Just wanted your opinions on the below matter..... Since getting my mk6 golf (1.6tdi s) I’ve almost been involved in 3 accidents where on every occasion the 3rd part has said
“Sorry, I thought you flashed meâ€
Unlike the higher spec golf’s, gti etc that have the LED DRL, I have the “main beam†style DRLs.
The first occasion a little old lady failed to give way to on-coming traffic at a speed trap, which almost ended up us having a head on crash.
She said sorry I thought you flashed me.......
Second occasion somebody cut me up as I was overtaking them.
He said, sorry I know I was in the wrong lane, but I thought you flashed me (he didn’t indicate)
Today on my way home from work..... I ‘m driving in a 30 zone approaching a junction which gives way to me, with a young lad up my **** revving the poo out of this 1.plok saxo. Normally at this junction if it’s safe to do so I flash the vehicle waiting at the give way point. (I like to think I’m a Christian driver and have a 1 car rule). Because of the tit up my **** I decide not to do so.... I’m still doing 30mph. As I’m no more than 4 car lengths from the car in at the give way point, she’s looking straight at me and starts to pull out!!
As I braked (quite hard) I looked in the rear view mirror to find the tit in saxo looking in his foot well! I sound the horn and the lady in front stops dead in the road right in my path. There’s no way I can stop in time I’m going to t-bone her. At this point everything is going in slow motion, and I’m amazed at how I managed to process everything so quickly. I took my foot of the brake and steered onto the wrong side of the road (luckily a bus had stopped at a bus stop a few yards before the junction stopping oncoming traffic).....
As I thought “wow that was close, I heard the blood curdling noise of twisting metal..... The saxo had hit the other car!
I pulled up to make sure everybody was ok..... They were.... thank god..... After I realised everybody was ok.... and it was just twisted metal I thought to myself..... Am I to blame for this.....
As the police turned up.... he said “what happened†to the lady, she said “I thought the guy in the white car (ME) flashed meâ€
To cut a long story short... the shopkeeper has CCTV which got the whole thing on tape..... After to cop reviewed it (I wasn’t allowed to see it)
And he got statements of everybody..... I was told I wasn’t to blame..... That to lady and the lad in the saxo was.......!!!!!
This has really unnerved me!!! If I drive over a bump in my car with its DRL on..... Does it really look like a flash???
Can I disable the lights, or are they needed for Mots and the LAW....
Could I retro fit some chav leds light strips that don’t look like main beams???
Plz discuss.
-
Mr. Hilton, welcome.
I have read and re-read your very unusual post and I am trying very hard to make sense of your rather unnerving experiences.
I concluded eventually, after much soul searching, that you are jinxed and drive through areas populated with morons. This has never happened to me so far and I thank my lucky stars.
Unfortunately, I cannot turn off my p1ss yellow DRLs due to some quirk in the electrics.
Your post is enabling me to even more seriously consider those £300 lights in Kenney's thread.
Here's hoping you don't have anymore near misses.
-
My Xenons are always on, it's just easier to leave the lights on auto. I do switch to side lights on the sometimes when I am motorway driving, just so as not attract unwanted attention (it's very noticable when you see a car with xenons in the distance behind you)
-
Mine are off.
I found them quite embarrassing. :embarassed:

Even when I turn the light switch to the off position, the DRLs stay on. Mr P said this was normal. Anyway, I like driving with my p!ss yellow DRLs on as I am a very strange person with peculiar tastes. :smug:
-
Yes, they'll be on even when switched off.
You need to disable them to avoid further embarrassment.
Left hand indicator and headlight flash and hold. Turn ignition on - it will beep after 3 seconds.
Page 64 of the manual. Make sure switch is set to off and not Auto when you do this.
Leave the DRLs to the Volvos, Saabs and now Audis. Most of the Golfs I see with them on are probably company cars and the drivers don't even know or care they're on, certainly can't be bothered to switch their light pollution off.
-
Am1W has the issue that SteveP had to fiddled with byte18 data and use a different value to others to get his rear LEDs working without errors.

top tip for the day
thanks golfti
I feel for the person above... as said the do look like a flash as people go over bumps, I have been mistaken previously but always proceed with caution. Get these darn things banned and cut the number of to$$ers on the road showing off
-
or get vw to do a recall and get me some led running lights
-
Well I quite like mine even if they are pi55 yellow.
They match my dim-dips on my Mk2.
-
I did turn them off, but turned them back on again.
Don't know why, but you always know you're meeting a Mark 6 by the DRLs, even from quite a way down the road.

Yeah, but most of them are hire cars.

I've been living with the yellow lights for too long, I've just turned them off until someone invents some DRL's that aren't p1ss yellow

-
Mine were off when I had halogens and I never bothered to set them after I installed the Xenons.
People think that you've just left your lights on as they're not distinctively different. People get it on Audis with their fairy light decorations because none of what appear to be the main lights are on.
Regarding DRLs being mistaken for someone flashing, anyone who thinks that is clearly thick. I'd buy it if we're having a conversation about automatic lights, there are a couple of junctions near me where my lights come on as I come under a bridge to the junction and every time, I get 1 or 2 people thinking I'm letting them through. If I wasn't aware of the issue, I probably would have driven into someone by now.

I have been told by a number of people "I though you flashed me to come out"... does that mean that I am thick? or would that be the person that pulled out making the assumption.
this has happened a number of times.. i dont see how I am to blame
-
So which do you all prefer
The Audi type ones ?
or the R type ones ?
BTW I have mine turned on permanantly to answer the OP's question
-
My GiT has always had her DRL's on, as a safety feature, esp as I do many miles (incl. motorway) everyday
Why go against the experts

R type ones please.

Hah! I just read that again. I mean the people who think that you're flashing them. Not you the driver. I'll take my foot out my mouth now shall I?

no worries
but i do stand by the fact that they are dangerous (to stupid people anyway)

Dangerous - the jury is out.
Look stupid - yes.
