My friend is going to buy a MK5 and wants to put the touchscreen head unit out of a MK6 in to it. Can this be done?
If it can, does he have to buy a seperate iPod interface (like the one I have under the armrest in my MK6) or can he connect the iPod directly to the headunit and still search tracks/artists/playlists etc the same way I would on my RCD510?
Thanks!

Hi mate, the RCD510 goes straight into a MK5, not sure about the iPod question though. I'll be selling my RCD510 next week due to RNS510 upgrade

That is great, thanks. I thought it would go straight in but just wanted to check.
The iPod connection might be a bit more difficult. He would like the same function as mine but I don't think this works when the iPod is connected through an auxiliary connection.

How much are you selling the unit for?

I had thought about £200 but looking on eBay they are going for much more than that. Mine also has the added benefit of being able to support the reversing camera

There may be issues with the CAN BUS thingies when retro fitting the radio to a mk5 causing battery drain. I used to know all this stuff but have forgotten it all now.
All I can remember is that on some mk5s (including both the ones I had) that you couldn't retro fit some radios and nav units due to the electrics not being compatible without further mods.
Morty and SteveP will know, failing that have a look in the relevant sections on StevePs mk5 forum which has everything you always wanted to know about every retro fit ever thought of.
Incidentally I had factory sat nav in my Polo GTI 1.8t however many years ago, and even that had issues with battery drain.

Also, on the Leon I have, if you have the larger MFD it can cause the clock to shift to the left, leaving only the minutes visible. Don't know whether it'd be the same on the Golf?

Sounds like a bargain! I Got £350 for mine - although it was taken out of the car on day one so hadn't been used other than the drive home from the dealers.

There alot cheaper now as theres been quite a few on the market. I have been watching them.

Jim,
Did you notice any sound quality differences between the two? They both sound p1ss poor IMO and need major help to sound acceptable.

I haven't heard it yet as i'm getting it fitted on Tuesday. If it's anything like my RCD I'm going to be disappointed but I do intend on fixing it in the future

Jim, (who is only the second person on the forum with discerning hearing ),
Sorry to puncture your bubble further, but it will probably sound worse.

WORSE! In that case I won't be able to stand it for long, I might give the guys you call to run through some options. My taste in music isn't quite the same as yours so they may suggest a different set-up to yours. The likes of Slipknot, Foo Fighters and Korn may need a different solution
Cheers,

If the system can sound fabulous playing a Mahler Symphony, it will sound great on everything. Mine also sounds ace on pop and rock.
My nephew was also complaining about his RCD510 today.

Jim,
Compare the RNS510 vs RCD510 during installation if you can.
GolfTi says that there is no sound quality difference between the RCD310 and RCD510, but the RNS510 lacks ooomph.
IMO, the RNS lacks more than that.

Thanks guys. He is looking in to it. He may need a seperate MDI for connecting the iPod and some places want to charge £295 for that alone!

I will do mate, I'll report back tomorrow night. I'll be sticking my RCD on eBay tomorrow night too, hopefully the video-in connection will help push the price up to help fund any sound improvements that are needed.

Great. Would be interesting to get your take on this.
Been a bloody 'mare with the RNS trying to achieve decent sound for a minimum outlay. Still ended up spending approx £1000.
Top tip: Factory order the Dynaudio and then add a sub.

Hi Jim.
Sorry to hear about your rear view camera problems.
Any comparative listening conducted?

Hi mate - Yeah, I was quite suprised at my perception that the sound was indeed better on the RNS than the RCD until I noticed that the bass was on maximum and other settings messed with. I returned them to those on my RCD and imo the sound was exactly the same which is poor at the very least. Where is the depth? In the mean time i'll return them to the artificial set-up that the last user had and wait for the upgrade.
Fingers crossed my camera will be sorted soon
Cheers,
Jim

Thanks Jim. I totally agree with your finding and feel 100% vindicated.
I went and listened to my nephew's RCD 510 over the weekend and it was as awful as the RNS 510.
These units have terrible amplifiers and a disappointing tonal balance.
