Title: What to look for on a mark 3?
Post by: Gaz on 10 September 2003, 12:23
Im seriously considering buying a mark 3 golf gti or vr6. It'll probably be the 16v GTI, but what sort of things should i be looking for? The car will almost certainly have 70k - 90k miles on it. Is the 16v much better than the 8v? Is the VR6 worth the extra ?200 on my insurance? Any advice or idea's r welcome! :)

the 8v shouldnt really be called a gti stick to 16v or vr6 i think the latter is quite juicey for the extra performance

Both are good motors  ;D  The vr6 is that bit better, but will cost you a bit more to run. Look out for all the usual things, service history etc, if the engine sounds good then it probably is, check for overheating . On mk3s check carefully round the doors for rust.
