Probably a computer fault unless the fuel tank level is showing you anything different.

This ^^^ although it also sounds like you've got it set to instant MPG as that's the only time you'll see 102mpg

Have you measured it over a full tank i.e. filled it, driven it, filled again and worked out the MPG the old fashioned way?

Could be a temp sender problem

My 1.4 16v also uses a lot of fuel but u'll get that because the 1.4 is always under powered because of the weight of the golf and ur always high revving to gain decent speeds. I know this because I do it haha.

Well if it is not getting to temp, it will not be helping.

You may have a thermostat problem.

Don't think it is the thermostat coz im get in hot on hot and cold on cold it just the temp gauge won't move some times it will to 90 then drop down one of my mate said it maybe the temp sender but i dunno if thats makein it burn most of my petrol

Faulty temp sender  / thermostat means your ECU thinks the car is permanently cold and will therefore chuck fuel in to compensate

Get both changed along with some fresh coolant
